This feline patient came in for a routine dental, but X-rays told a different story. FORL was identified beneath the surface, highlighting why dental radiographs are essential for cats.

White arrows highlight a painful FORL-affected tooth, where the root structure is being resorbed.

Black arrows point to a healthy tooth with a normal root outline.

The following image is a different patient showing what a healthy pet’s mouth looks like.

Proper dental care plays a vital role in your cat’s overall health. These before-and-after photos showcase the impact of a professional dental cleaning—removing plaque and tartar, helping prevent periodontal disease, and leaving your cat with a healthier mouth and fresher breath. Regular dental check-ups and at-home oral care help keep your feline feeling their best.

🦷 Feline Tooth Resorption (FORL) 🐱

This is a lower canine tooth where dental radiographs revealed root resorption, a hallmark of Feline Odontoclastic Resorptive Lesions (FORL).

FORL is a painful and progressive condition where a cat’s own body starts breaking down the tooth structure—often below the gumline, making it easy to miss on a visual exam alone. That’s why dental X-rays are essential in feline dentistry.

Cats are masters at hiding pain, but untreated resorptive lesions can cause significant discomfort. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment (often extraction) can make a huge difference in a cat’s comfort and quality of life.
