šŸ¢ When Workspaces Overflow šŸ’»

October is Canada’s Healthy Workplace Month—a perfect moment to remember that mental health doesn’t stop at the office door.

Hoarding isn’t just a home issue—it can happen at work too. One teacher shared in a support group how a coworker filled a quarter of shared storage with decades of old papers, craft supplies, and bags—so much so that teammates had to dump excess items just to reclaim space. This kind of office hoarding isn’t just an eyesore—it’s a stressor, a safety concern, and a sign of deeper emotional distress.

When someone's workspace is overwhelmed, it isn’t about disorganization—it’s often about anxiety, control, or emotional overwhelm. And it impacts teamwork, productivity, and well-being.

During Healthy Workplace Month, let’s challenge ourselves to show empathy and provide support—not just reprimand. Encourage organizational tools, compassionate conversations, and resources like HALO that can help address the root causes of clutter, whether at home or work.

HALO partners with individuals, families, and even employers to restore safe, functional, and healthy spaces—because mental wellness belongs everywhere we live and work.

Hoarding Is Mental Illness šŸ’ŠšŸ¤•

Hoarding isn’t a bad habit—it’s a mental illness. And yet, so many people facing it are treated with judgment instead of care.

This Mental Illness Awareness Week, we want to say this loud and clear:šŸ‘‰ If someone’s home is unsafe, it doesn’t mean they are unworthy. It means they need support, not shame.

At HALO, we approach hoarding as a mental health issue because it is one. We walk beside people—not over them—as they take steps toward safety, healing, and hope.

Let's Talk Hoarding 🧹🧼
A lot of our business here at HALO are clients with . There are some very misunderstood things about people with this form of .
Some of the myths that must be busted are:
- hoarding is a choice - it is NOT
- people can just clean up - they CANNOT
- all people with hoarding disorder live in squalor- they do NOT
Hoarding is a that stems from many others disorders and including and many others. It is not a choice, it is a behaviour that oftentimes accompanies these disorders.
Hoarding is characterised by a need to hold onto items (and sometimes animals) regardless of their condition and/ or usefulness. There is a deep, albeit disproportionately so, relationship between the person with hoarding disorder and their hoarded belongings. As such, they cannot merely clean up - it literally is not possible without proper counseling and proper supports like HALO, and family/ friends.
Also, despite what we see on television, not all people with hoarding disorder live in squalor. There are 5 stages od hoarding all with their varying degrees of severity. The first level is characterised by a fully functional home with the beginnings of collections whereas level 5 characterizes homes as unlivable.
No matter what stage - HALO is here to help. We understand hoarding disorder and that at the root of it is a PERSON in need of help, not a hoarder in need of a broom.

🐾 Homes for All Creatures

World Rabies Day reminds us how many animals suffer in hoarded homes. HALO has seen heartbreaking conditions—pets trapped in filth, unable to be cared for properly. In extreme cases, animals have been found living among waste, confined to single rooms, or denied access to food, water, and sunlight. These situations are not only tragic—they're criminal.

Hoarding is a mental health disorder, and animal hoarding is a painful branch of it. Some individuals begin with love for their pets, but lose the ability to care for them responsibly. This leads to deplorable living conditions for both animals and humans. Cleaning isn't just about tidiness—it’s about saving lives.

HALO works to restore homes that are safe for every family member—furry or otherwise.

🚪 Pinned Under Debris in B.C.

In January 2013, Burnaby, B.C. firefighters faced a terrifying rescue: an elderly man in his 70s had been pinned under ceiling-high piles of garbage and debris in his hoarded home for at least three days before being discovered by concerned neighbours.

They had to cut through doors, saw through walls, and navigate treacherous clutter just to reach him. The man was severely dehydrated and without heating or electricity. Fire crews warned that another day could’ve killed him.

This isn’t an exaggeration—it’s real, it’s Canadian, and it’s horrifying. Hoarding doesn’t just hide—it confines. Homes become prisons.

At HALO, we don’t just tidy rooms—we respond to human crises. We clear pathways—physically and emotionally. Every bag removed, every space reclaimed, saves lives and restores hope.

šŸ§¼šŸ› ļø One Bag at a Time

Transformations don’t happen overnight; it can take days—sometimes weeks. But every filled garbage bag is a step forward.

Hoarding disorder creates decision paralysis. What to keep? What to toss? What if I need this someday? Many individuals with hoarding disorder believe their possessions are more valuable than they actually are. Even letting go of a single bag can feel impossible.

This is why HALO often connects clients with mental health professionals. Changing how someone thinks about their items is essential to prevent re-hoarding. Cleaning without healing simply isn’t enough.

Support, not shame, clears the path.

šŸ“¦ Too Much to Tackle?

You’re not lazy. You’re not dirty. Hoarding is a complex mental health condition that affects an estimated 1.5 million Canadians—and that number is likely underreported. Many sufferers hide it due to shame or fear of judgment. But behind every closed door is a story that deserves compassion, not criticism.

In one Ontario case, a home had over 4,000 pounds of material removed—everything from newspapers stacked 6 feet high to expired food from the 90s. It took 5 days, 4 people, and multiple dumpsters.

If this sounds shocking, it’s because it is. Hoarding is isolating. But it doesn't have to stay that way.

šŸ” Cleaning the mess is just the surface work. Healing begins when we understand the why.

🦠🧹 Under the Piles

Beneath the clutter is often danger —not just discomfort. A home’s air quality, water access, and even structural safety can all be compromised.

Hoarding disorder isn’t about mess—it’s a serious mental health issue. Tackling the clutter means more than tossing junk; it often means calling in plumbers, electricians, and general contractors to restore basic function. Often, as we remove layers of clutter, we uncover dangerous issues hidden beneath—mold, pests, rotting walls, unsound structures, and violations of health and building codes. Sometimes these can be fixed. Other times, the home is too far gone.

A shocking 60% of hoarded homes have building code violations, and many teeter on the edge of being condemned.
