In August, we took a group exercise class at F45 Doon (Thanks for hosting us!). We went through a grueling high intensity interval training (HIIT) /functional fitness training workout for the full body.
Some of us had some experience with group exercise classes, and some of us were more used to working out on our own.
Whether you’re doing group circuit training, or any other group exercise class (even if it’s virtual/online!), there are many things that you have to get used to. Even if you’re experienced with exercise, if you’ve never worked out in a group before or with someone else telling you what to do, it can be a jarring experience… but also super fun!
You may feel increased soreness after the first few sessions, especially if you don’t usually do that type of exercise. There certainly is SOME crossover in terms of general fitness and strength, but if you only ever do weightlifting and suddenly you try a cardio HIIT class, you might find that it feels challenging in a different way and your muscles will handle it differently compared to your usual weightlifting exercise.
To help you mentally get ready for your group exercise class, I’m going to break down some tips and tricks you feel ready to take the challenge on!
Allow your body some time to get used to the new exercises and some flexibility to push harder at the end of the class if you want to

🏃♀️☀️ On Sunday, October 19th, our amazing client Anya and her son took on the Toronto Waterfront Marathon 5K...
And what a perfect day it was for a run! We couldn’t have asked for better weather or better memories.
Anya, after working through some injuries leading up to the race, was just proud to cross that finish line 🏁 (4,677th!).
💪 Jordan placed 125th overall out of 6,667 runners and 12th in his age group (15–19). 🎉
A huge shoutout to Amanda for helping them both get race-ready; from targeted exercises to recovery work on sore backs and legs 🙌

Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is an inflammation of the common extensor tendon (which attaches to the lateral epicondyle bone), and Golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis) is an inflammation of the common flexor tendon (which attaches to the medial epicondyle bone).
The injury typically occurs in the tendons, the injuries are just named for the bone in which they attach to.
So, here’s the short clarification: pain due to inflammation of the tendons on the outside of your elbow is called tennis elbow.
To understand more about this common injury, check out our blog post!

Many people with elbow pain on the inside of their elbow get diagnosed with golfer’s elbow, and are left confused because they’ve never played more than their local mini-putt!
Golfer’s elbow is the layman’s term for a tendinopathy at the medial epicondyle.
Tendinopathy means a pathology in a tendon (the structure that connects muscle to bone).
Medial epicondyle is the bony location that the irritated tendon inserts on.
You may be more familiar with the term “medial epicondylitis”, which is still prevalent in society, social media, and possibly even with your health care practitioner! The suffix “-itis” indicates inflammation, so medial epicondylitis means “inflammation of the medial epicondyle”.
For treatment, exercises and more, check out our new blog post on golfer's elbow!

Strive Physiotherapy & Performance began as a dream idea discussed between two friends who were frustrated with the health industry. In short, the dream was to be in a clinic where there was ongoing education, a positive and familial atmosphere, and clinicians dedicated to customer service and quality of care instead of numbers.
After taking a leap of faith and starting Strive Physiotherapy & Performance, Mike began as the only person working in our entire clinic. No front desk staff, no RMT, no physiotherapy assistant... and no on site laundry machines! (That’s right, he would run the laundry back and forth from his house between clients).
In 2018 we celebrated our 3rd birthday. We are now 3 physiotherapists, 2 RMTs and 3 office administrators... and adding more! We pride ourselves in our thorough, one-on-one care. That means no assistants sitting with you after seeing the physiotherapist for 5 minutes, no continually changing staff. You will be seen by the same physiotherapist for your entire appointment, every time. We help each client understand their injury, work towards recovery, and build strength and the confidence to reduce the risk of future injury.
Each of us loves our job, and we look forward to coming to work every day. Seriously! It’s hard to dread Mondays when you love what you do. We look forward to seeing each of our clients, and guiding them through their recovery.
Stop putting it off until ‘tomorrow’ - make the call today, and get back to doing what you love.
