A little moment of magic in the Lac Brome village this week!

Yesterday, I had the immense pleasure of offering a Red Tent- Birth Story Sharing Circle at the Lac Brome Community Center during the Monday morning, weekly parents group, that I animate. A FREE Community event!! :D

This felt like an extra special moment because none of the mothers had ever attended a Red Tent nor knew much about what it was. There was definitely a mix of curiosity and nervousness at the beginning. It was beautiful to witness the settling, unfolding and trust. Seeing the parents open into vulnerability and compassionate listening. Even though most didn't know each other, I am certain they all walked away from this experience feeling closer and that the human experience of birth is a passage like no other. It was unifying.

I've been facilitating Red Tents for 8 years now, each one is unique and to meet a variety of needs.

Red Tents are a timeless tradition, an intimate space created by ancient cultures, who knew to gather women together, to nurture and support one another.

Modern Red Tents can take the form of a monthly moon tent to share on our cycles and seasons. A space to build friendships and to lean in on one another and foster nourishing bonds.

They can also take the form of celebrating a young girls first menstruation as a community- a space to share with her on what is to come and impart wisdom to help support her on her journey.

A Red Tent can be organized during pregnancy to offer blessings and nourishment to a mother who is soon to birth- offering a space for the women closest to her, or of her community, to weave a web of care and set the intentions to be there for her after her child arrives.

A Red Tent could be organized after birth to celebrate a mothers matrescence. Her transformation in all the sense, hormonal, physical, emotional, her societal and family role. Again a space to deeply nourish a mother, a conscious setting of intentions as a community to show up for each other and form a network of allo-parents to care for a child.

SO many possibilities! It makes me shiver and shine!

Have you ever attended a Red Tent? What was it like for you?
Want to come next time??!!

(La traduction en français suivra)

Tomorrow morning (Monday April 15th) we will be holding a Red Tent- Birth Story Sharing Circle experience at the Lac Brome playgroup.

What to expect:
🤱This circle will be for Mothers and babies in arms only.
Older children are welcome to stay with Claire in the daycare room across the hall.
⏰We will begin at 10am and end at 11:30am
Please plan to arrive between 9:30-9:45am if you would like to get an older child settled with Claire in the daycare before we begin.
🫶We will create a confidential, loving and respectful space for women to share their experiences of child birth. You may share any story that you have experienced. Some may have challenging stories to tell, and some may have joyful, empowering ones. All stories are welcome without judgement.
💕I will share on the history of the Red Tent at the beginning of the event.
Once again please arrive on time and plan to stay for the duration of the sharing circle so that we can create an intimate and present experience for all.
✨🌹✨🌹✨🌹✨🌹✨🌹✨🌹✨🌹✨

Celebrating 11 years of walking the path as a doula!
This February marks the anniversary of the first birth I attended, 11 years ago.
11 is my magic number!
I do feel like this doula year was extra magical…
The reason being is that I almost hung up my doula hat last year.
I was feeling very tired, worn out from being on call and juggling so many other projects, and commitments. There was also a piece of me that was identifying as the “giver” and the “saver.” I had a hard time saying No and listening to my intuition when it told me…”Come on Jen, you have given enough…rest, take care of you.”
This year I decided to try out a new style…only say Yes to doula care when you feel a whole body YES. Don’t do it from a place of need, or feeling like you should. Do it with a full hearted yes, and with some softer conditions. Conditions like, telling myself and my clients, “I might not be there,” letting go and having complete trust in divine timing- taking time to care for me and then when my cup is full it can spill over more easily.

This years births were extra F*^&antastic!!! I only attended 5 so that I had time to breath, recuperate, and be as fully present as possible.
All the Mama’s I had the pleasure and honor to sit beside this year, as the waves of labour rocked them, were amazing! 3 hospital births and 2 home births. I had the complete surprise and honor to catch 4 out of 5 of these babes! Each for unique reasons- but holy goddess what a rush! The Papa’s were each so deeply present, and loving. Several shared how having a doula presence allowed them to relax into the experience and shed some levels of anxiety and have deep trust in the unfolding of the birth.

Sitting in birth is still one of my most favorite places to be. I feel so very deeply present and connected to the Source. I forget about time and am only in the Now. Divine inspiration and intuition flow with ease.

I accompanied several other families through their First 40 Days, providing nurturing and care for them during this tender period. It’s something I love dearly to offer and wish for each new family to have access to.

This year also held other special co-creations for the perinatal period.
I had the honor to facilitate some special ceremonies and rituals for families.
*Placenta and Tree Planting ceremony
*Mama Blessing ceremony
*Rebozo Closing of the Bones ceremony
*Red Tents

Along with one of my other life’s joys multiplying!
As many know, I have animated the Sutton Baby Drop-in for nearly 10 years now (that celebration is coming soon this spring! Stay tuned.)
I was offered the opportunity just before Christmas to start hosting the Lac Brome Parent & Baby group. This means 3 times a week, I get to share my passion for the birth and parenting world with those looking for connection, inspiration and guidance in both Sutton and Lac Brome now. It is truly so lovely to gather with parents in circle. Since the dawn of time, people have had community to lean into during this crucial time of becoming parents…it feels so good to be creating this much needed space within my community. I feel so blessed during every gathering.

My other new “baby project” this year was developing the Family Respite program through the Sutton CAB. For years now I have dreamed of being able to offer doula care for free through a community organization so that the most vulnerable of the community can access this much needed care. I pitched this project idea to the Sutton CAB, that I offer free postpartum in-home care and counseling to families in the area who are in need and then train a group of volunteers (mostly grandmothers) to step in after a few visits with this family so that they can integrate as “allo-family” and offer a weekly visit to cook, care for the little one(s) or just share a cup of tea to help break isolation. The project is still in its early years, but it is so exciting to see it living and growing!

For those still reading, haha, thanks for bearing with me in my celebration ;p
Many thanks to all the families who reached out to me and asked me along for the ride, this year and over the last 11 years. (Bonus points to those who comment on how many 11’s are in this post, lol).
I love you and you will always hold a dear place in my heart.
Here’s to 11 more years on the doula path!
