KC Doula Services What is a Doula? A doula is "A Women who Serves"

Bebo.Mia Certified Doula I had a doula, something I had never been blessed with in my prior births.

Hello,
My name is Keshia Carmichael and I live in Lacombe Alberta with my wonderful husband and four lovely children. At a young age I always had a passion for babies and what brings more happiness than getting to be a part of a women and mans journey into parenthood. In the past I ran a day home where I got to be a part of so many smiling faces my day was filled with joy. Having a family of six and surrounding myself with little ones has always warmed my heart. I knew there would be more for me after experiencing an at home, water birth with my fourth child. She was so calming, so reassuring, she truly made my birth all that it should be and more. I am so grateful to her because if not for that experience I am not sure I would have known my true calling - doula work. I really feel a woman should get to experience the birth for them, whatever that may be. As a doula I'm honoured to be a part of a woman’s birth and postpartum experience and find nothing more amazing than guiding her to draw upon her inner strength. I treat each birth uniquely and am so grateful for each and every birth I get to take part in.

I could talk about all the ways a third means you’re outnumbered, how the juggle of your heart, mind, and mental load only leaves room for quick-fire decisions, and an exhaustion you never knew.

I could talk about how the giving never feels like enough, someone is always needing, someone is usually crying. There’s yelling (sometimes over the baby’s head). They know you’re one person, and yet they’re too young to fully comprehend that.

I could talk about the overuse of the bouncer, the naps in the carrier, and how life suddenly feels like a tornado around you while you’re in slow motion.

But I could also talk about how the world doesn’t implode when things are forgotten and how maybe I needed that reminder, how things being a little more up in the air has simultaneously grounded me.

I could talk about my lack of confidence to take all 3 on outings alone just yet. How it’s meant for a lot of togetherness at home instead. But laughter still fills the yard and memories are still being made. The simplicity is settling.

I could talk about the night wakes being easier. Not just because I’m used to it, but because they’re our moments. She’s not feeding wide-eyed with screaming and chaos around her. It’s just us in the quiet of my future best memories.

I could talk about how my body has changed the most this time around, but also how I’m comfortable in my new size. It still feels a bit foreign, but my body has given me a lot.

I could talk about how fast this is going. And this time it really is. She’s rolling over now, and I’m not fixated this time as to when she’ll reach a milestone. It’s taken two for me to realize I don’t need to rush moments through, time will do that for me.

I could talk about her room being unfinished, her clothes being mismatched, and how she gets a little more floor time than I would like,
but then she flashes me that
just-woken-up smile and none of it matters.

I know I can’t be everything to everyone, all at one time.
But this third time?
It’s given me the grace to realize I don’t have to be, and I’m a better version of myself because of it.
This hard has been my happiest.
So I guess I could talk about that.

My Resumè (the motherhood version)

Sorry I’m late,
I should have updated my CV!
What have I been doing
So far on this degree?

Well, I’ve done some nursing
I’ve done some juggling too
I’m also good at herding cats
With feeding time at the zoo
And I’m quite the illusionist
With peek-a-boo.

I’m a great nursery-rhyme singer
Thinking of joining a choir
And sometimes at night
I’m a human pacifier.

But don’t put that last part down
Because that would be weird.

I’m a researcher and an analyst
I work through many problems
I can handle all sorts of challenges
Throw them at me, I’ll solve them.

I’m an experienced hygienist
Nightly baths are my profession
Oh no, I’m not talking about myself
Sorry, what was your question?

I’ve had some workplace injuries
Someone called it a ‘rod for my back’
But somehow I survived
With endurance and not giving a crap.

I’m also an event planner
I’m a taxi and a chef
A stylist and a storyteller
And a great cleaner of mess.

I’m a director and a producer
And let me just recap
References during lunch is out
My boss will be taking a nap.

I’m a teacher and a student
Sometimes that line is blurred
I’m a mediator and a builder
And I translate words
What language, you ask?
Oh, you wouldn’t have heard.

I’m a heavyweight champion
A bodyguard, a judge
A chemist and a life coach
And I don’t hold a grudge.

What do I do in my spare time?
I go for walks around the street
Looking like utter arse
Muttering, ‘Please go to sleep.’

What are my key attributes?
Well, I’m braver now and stronger
I’m confident in my choices
I can push myself a little longer.

I’m a multitasker, a sleep consultant
And by that, I mean a hammock
I love taking photos of my family
That look more like National Geographic.

I’m a financial planner, a shift worker
An impressionist, an assistant
An inspector and a detector
No day is ever consistent.

I’m also quite the tour guide
And pretty good, I’m told
I know I only have two arms
But you should see how much I can hold.

My weakness is, I guess
I feel everything 10 x more
Since becoming someone’s home
I’m somewhat different than before.

My last salary for all this work?
No, I didn’t charge a fee
It’s the greatest ‘job’ I ever had
I’d do it all again for free.
