🌿 Tea on Tuesdays: Nettle — The Great Nourisher 🌿
I have many favourite herbs… but I’m starting with some of my best gals.
Why the feminine? Because they are, after all, gifts from Mother Nature.
And Nettle (Urtica dioica) is one of the most generous plants we have.
Often dismissed as a roadside w**d, nettle is actually one of the most nutrient-dense medicinal plants in Western herbalism.
Rich in minerals, silica, vitamin C, flavonoids and chlorophyll, nettle acts as a deeply nutritive tonic for the whole body.
In practice, I reach for it often.
While nettle isn’t traditionally classified as a nervous system herb, improving nutritional status alone can profoundly affect mood, energy and resilience. Many people experience anxiety or fatigue simply because their bodies are under-nourished — something herbs like nettle can gently help correct over time.
This is why you’ll often see it in formulas aimed at supporting:
• hair, skin and nail health
• recovery from depletion
• building stronger tissues
I frequently combine it with herbs like oat straw, horsetail or alfalfa when tissue nourishment is the goal.
✨ Anti-allergic support
Nettle leaf has a long history of use for allergic rhinitis (hay fever). When taken regularly, it can help moderate histamine responses and reduce the severity of seasonal allergies. If allergies tend to visit you each spring, this is a beautiful herb to begin working with now.
✨ Depurative action
Nettle is also considered a classic depurative herb — meaning it helps the body gently cleanse while simultaneously rebuilding.
Through its support of kidney function, circulation and nutrient delivery, it is often included in protocols for chronic skin conditions such as eczema, acne and inflammatory skin states.
In other words: it helps move stagnation while nourishing the tissues at the same time.
✨ Food as medicine
Although I enjoy a good green juice, nettle tea or nettle meals are much more my style.
Fresh spring nettles can be cooked just like spinach and are wonderful in soups, pestos, sautés or folded into an omelette.
And perfect timing — over the next month or so, nettle will begin emerging all over Vancouver Island.
