Your summer is ticking along and then WHAMO! Your back starts hurting, you twist your knee, you can’t lift your coffee cup, what is happening?
Rehab is a lot like going back to school, and here are some reasons why:
1. It comes often unexpectedly - maybe your injury was related to a specific incident but most come gradually.
2. It cuts into your fun, work and pre-existing plans - suddenly that new project you’ve been working on is halted or you are dreading your long drive in the car for that road trip.
3. It feels foreign and you don’t really know what to expect - each injury is unique, even repeat ones.
4. It’s uncomfortable- often physically and mentally - healing processes can be uncomfortable but we find the mental game of new rules and restrictions often are the hardest for clients to wrap their heads around and not feel the dread.
Our tips to make this back to health (like school) smooth:
1. Surround yourself with a good health care team who communicates - over treating can be as detrimental as under treating
2. Have clear conversations about expectations and the road ahead
3. Let yourself feel the emotions of the current reality, take your time then pivot and set new goals for the coming months
4. Give yourself grace in the transition
5. Prioritize rest and nutrition
6. Focus on what your beautiful body can do and lean into that
The bonus of rehab? You meet new friends, you learn, you grow and get stronger and very often leave a little bit more grown up 😉
