🔗 As a wife and a mom and a caregiver who has “struggled” with putting myself last on the list for too long, I wanted to share some of the lessons that I have learned over the past few years as the amount of people I take care of has increased.

The more people I added to the list to take care of, the less I chose to take care of myself (yes I see it as a choice to not take care of myself… more on that another time).

Either I had to do something differently or I was going to break.

So I broke... 😞
..and eventually in the rebuilding,
I’ve had to learn how to do things differently while still taking care of the same load.

🔗 I also wanted to share some of the lessons I’ve learned as an RMT helping other people recover from and rehab low back injuries.

🔗 I also included my own journey with low back pain and the key components I’ve discovered that have kept my body in pain for too many years (22 and counting…)

I was a high level athlete through high school and into my mid-twenties. Always playing in pain but playing none-the-less.

Til it all came to a halt in order for me to get pregnant and not be on bed rest.

That part of the story was 10 years ago.

Last year was a turning point.
My youngest started kindergarten
And it was finally my turn.

Slowly over the past year I have been working myself out from the place I’ve been stuck.

22 years is a long time to be stuck on the same course
but no matter how long you’ve been traveling in a direction,
there’s always a way to change course.

Although I’d love to be farther along in my journey, I know that pacing myself is one of the most important things. And I know that the lessons I learn are meant to be shared with others on a similar journey.

For this weekend I’ve slashed the price.

Sometimes the path we’re on has us feeling like the snail. Every rock in our way feels like a Boulder, one slow move forward and then another rock in our way. Feeling like it’s taking forever to get to where we want to go...

Other times, the path we’re on feels like the kid on the scooter, maybe we stop to take a break here and there, but for the most part, life is smooth sailing and the path feels easy.

Whichever path you’re on, I hope you can keep your head up.

Some stretches of the path are more challenging than we can imagine and make us feel like we’re never going to get to where we want to go. We will get there eventually.

Other times, the path feels smooth and easy, and we need to remember to take lots of deep breaths and enjoy the stretch, we never know how long it will last.

Who do you support?

Whether it’s your kids, or your spouse, or someone else you’re taking care of, you’re always there for them, always there to help them with whatever they need...

Who supports you?
Yeesh! This can be a hard one.
We all feel like we have to run our race alone; do all the things ourselves, but unless we have support from someone or a few key people or sometimes even a whole tribe, we’re headed for burnout (especially when caring for many generations at once) so, make sure you’re leaning into your support system often.

How do you support yourself?
Whether it’s long walks on the beach, a cup of tea or coffee in your favourite chair, extra sleep or naps, exercise, a bath, a good book, a good scream/cry we need to support ourselves on this sometimes lonely journey of motherhood/caregiving...

There I was again, laid flat out because my back ‘went out’.

Nothing exciting or brag-worthy, just a small, simple movement and my pelvis seized and the low back pain almost sent me to my knees...

But this time was different.

I knew what needed to be done!
I knew that rest was key, but I also knew the movements that would unlock the frozen feeling.
I knew the stretches that would decrease the biting in my left butt cheek and nerve pain down my leg.
I knew the postural tweaks and corrections that would almost automatically calm the pain down.

I knew what needed to be done and after doing it, the pain was gone.

After years with babies and toddlers, I finally figure it out.

As an RMT, and fellow low back pain suffer-er, I am here to help you.

Taking care of young kids, or taking care of other people (or somethings both at the same time) is hard enough,
but when you add low back pain, it goes to a whole new level.

With the system I have created, I can get you better in 4-6 treatments.

I have 5 appointment spots available next week.

The Porch Health & Wellness is brought to you by Jenn McKay.

An RMT and guide for women who are looking to ReIgnite their life - body, mind and spirit.

Life can be stressful, unbalanced and often as a wife / mom / caretaker / etc you get pushed to the back burner and weeks/months/years go by and you haven't thought about yourself, your needs, what makes you happy, or your dreams/goals. Your body feels foreign - you aren't able to be as active as you would like to, because of extra pounds, pain, or just a lack of strength and mobility.

Through a Massage or Massage/Strength combo session, or the ReIgnite the Light Program or workshop, Jenn helps women reconnect to who they were created to be. Both in her home clinic and online.
