Had one of those days the other day - the washing machine broke, I found a crack in the car windshield, everything seemed to be heading in the wrong direction.

After this, I felt much better.

Sometimes we all need a reminder that doing something you love, especially if it's physical, can really help. Exercise really is medicine.

We're often asked a very thought-provoking question: Why do so many different kinds of treatment seem to work for pain?

It's a long and complicated answer, but the short version is that generally, our bodies know how to heal themselves. Our job as therapists is to facilitate that - manual therapy, dry needling, and education are all simply some of the tools we use.

You can add one more thing to that list - breathing! A research review done in 2024 shows that breathing exercises significantly reduced pain intensity and improved physical disability in people with low back pain. The most effective protocols involved breathing resistance exercises performed for 30 to 50 minutes, 3 to 5 times per week, for more than 4 weeks. That's quite a lot, but the take home message is important: we all have the tools to help ourselves when we're hurting!

Another summer Vancouver Island weekend in the books.

This whole province is pretty incredible - from the mountains of Whistler to the dry, hot interior, there's really quite a bit to see and do. But, after a few weekends away it's always great to come home to the island!

Tell me there's a runner in the house without telling me there's a runner in the house.

There is some evidence to suggest that having multiple pairs of shoes can be a useful strategy for injury prevention in runners. One study found that people did well when wearing different kinds of shoes for different types of run workouts (eg. lighter shoes for faster runs, cushier shoes for long runs). That study was funded by a running shoe company, so take it with a grain of salt - but interesting nonetheless.

Even though running shoe design and philosophy has changed a ton over the past decade, shoe choice remains important for those running consistently. Thank you Frontrunners Westshore for being there to help us sort through all the madness!

This one shouldn't come as a surprise to any of us.

Did you know that people who eat more fruit and veggies have higher quality sleep?

From a recent study in the Journal of the National Sleep Foundation, 'Higher daytime intakes of fruits and vegetables and carbohydrates that align with a healthy diet were associated with less disrupted nighttime sleep. A 5-cup increase (from no intake) in fruits and vegetables, meeting dietary recommendations, was associated with 16% better sleep quality.'

Takeaway? Eat more plants.

Exactly one week from today, this phenomenal group of people will be riding the first ever End2endcancer relay, in support of children, youth and families affected by the life-changing diagnosis of childhood cancer.

Starting the evening of Tuesday, June 17th, they will relay ride, in pairs, from Victoria to Port Hardy and back - IN JUST 48 HOURS!

This is the first year for this event, and their fundraising efforts have been phenomenal - but they could still really use our help. Follow & share their page, send them a note, buy a jersey or 50/50 ticket, donate online, or even better - show up at Trek Bikes Victoria on the evening of Thursday the 19th to welcome them home!

What have we learned in 8 years?

We opened our doors to patients on May 23rd, 2017. On our first anniversary, we wrote a blog post, entitled ‘What we’ve learned in our first year’ – a partly serious, partly tongue-in-cheek review of how steep the learning curve of clinic ownership actually is (I just checked, and ‘steep learning curve’ is the same expression I used back then – guess my writing skills haven’t evolved much).

The blog post is up now, but here is the last point:

There are lots of ways to measure success - and if support from the community is one of them, we’re winning. Thank you to each and every one of our awesome patients who put their trust in us to help them get back to the things they love.

Magic pills exist. And we have them at Motus.

Kind of.

If you were to find one at our clinic, it would be in the back. In the gym.

Are you with us? The right dose, type, and frequency of exercise can literally be magical for your health. Within 5-10 minutes of beginning exercise, you will have started to:

Strengthen your immune system
Perk up your mood
Reduce inflammation
Promote clear thought and creativity
Increase your metabolism (burn more calories!)
Slow the release of stress hormones
Reduce anxiety

Even better, exercising with someone else is more beneficial - and the biochemical evidence exists to back this up!

We'd love to finish off by saying that this is all free, but the truth is, there is a cost. Those who just can't find 5-10 minutes simply won't get these benefits. Seems like a good time to figure out which camp you're in.
