Maybe you were expecting to see a smoothie bowl on my page, perhaps a dairy free, gluten free, carb free, fat free, bowl of water.
Well no, what you see is my Sunday LATE night dinner. (Eating after 8pm oh no!!)
What a bad example I must be setting…
I’m here to tell you, health and wellness goes far beyond portraying a “picture perfect” life. It involves embracing the HUMAN EXPERIENCE. Create moments and memories with your loved ones, because let's face it, we are not around forever and tomorrow is never promised.
Every December 8th I drink a Black Tooth Grin, to honor the passing of one of my childhood heroes, Dime.
I didn’t want to go to the bar alone, so my brother tagged along. We got the chicken wings because they were on special, and after a few rounds we were full, happy and laughing. It was then that I realized that my brother and I don’t get to spend Christmas together very often, and this year he will be away.
This had become our unintentional Christmas dinner! Despite our food and beverage being considered “unhealthy”, I do NOT feel any GUILT or SHAME in showing it to you, because last night was about feeding my soul.

Do you ever eat something delicious, and a few moments later it feels like the gates of hell have opened up in your chest?

Heartburn. Its when our stomach acid is pushed back up our esophagus and makes us feel like we have swallowed razors. A common symptom of over indulgence, however high frequency can evolve into a much more serious condition.

What causes it?
*Hyper/Hypochlorhydria (high/low amounts of stomach acid)
*Excessive Fullness
*High Fat Meals
*Carbonated Drinks
*Coffee & Alcohol
*Spicy Food
*Stress/Anxiety
*Hiatus Hernia

How to get rid of it?
*Chew thoroughly & eat slowly
*Do not lay down after a meal
*Tbsp of aloe vera gel a few mins before a meal
*Don’t eat close to bed time
*Elevate the head end of your bed.
*Digestive enzymes

Sorry friends, the only magic in this world is in the form of Santa, and those head scratchy thingies.

Kale, quinoa, fancy nut butters, or cold pressed juices won’t make you lose weight if you are not eating the correct amount. In fact, the right amount of “bad” food will most likely result in more effective weight loss compared to the wrong amount of “good” food.

So how do we figure out how much we should be eating?
1. Calculate Basal Metabolic Rate (How many calories you burn a day at rest.)
2. Multiply it by the Harris Benedict Equation (Calories burned estimated by weekly activity)
3. Take your newly found maintenance calories and subtract 200-500 calories .
4. Create a nutrient dense meal plan with macronutrient ratios suited to your goals and lifestyle.
If all that sounds like gibberish, then step 5 will be the most important.

Our Liver is as smart as our brain!

Our livers are tasked with over 500+ functions in our body, and although we cannot live without one, we are able to survive with only 30% of its cells. Also it is our heaviest organ!

It would be impossible to explain each function of the liver so let’s just focus on a few!

Digestion:
Creates bile to emulsify (breakdown) fats.
Stores and releases glycogen to fuel our bodies as needed.
Synthesizes protein to build & repair our bodies.

Elimination of toxins:
The liver takes fat soluble toxins and puts it through its detoxification pathways. This makes the toxins water soluble so that they can be excreted through our pathways of elimination. (F***s and Urine)

SCROLL TO SEE SKIN IMPROVEMENT!

Having struggled with acne for over 10 years, I tried scrubs, wipes, facials, antibiotics, gels, and even accutane. Nothing worked! In fact, most of the time it would damage my already sensitive skin.

So how did I fix my skin?
I realized that the issue needed to be tackled (Holistically) from multiple angles. By learning about acne, I put together a routine that has my face feeling clear, strong and healthy.

The Truth About Oils!

If you are interested in healthy oils, you should know that olive oil is not your only option! In fact there could be a “better” option depending on what you are cooking!

To keep things simple, the two greatest factors you should consider when choosing an oil are an oil’s Smoke Point, and its Omega 3 content.
Typically the higher the Omega 3 content, the lower the Smoke Point.

For example, Flax seed oil is tremendously rich in omega 3’s however it should only be used for salad dressings or added to a smoothie since exposure to low heat can quickly make this oil go rancid. Even exposure to sunlight can damage this oil so it is best stored in your fridge!

On the other end of the spectrum, Avocado oil has the highest smoke point of any plant based oil at 520 degrees F. This makes it safe and ideal for grilling, roasting, frying and baking and as a bonus, it is loaded with heart healthy monounsaturated fats!

Remember that with everything, the danger is in the dose. Just because we consider something healthy, does not mean we should abandon the concept of moderation. Oils as very calorically dense at 9 calories per gram, and could very easily hinder your health and fitness goals!
