Honoured to Share the Stage at Fraser Health OBGYN Grand Rounds 💫

This past week, I had the privilege of presenting alongside some truly brilliant colleagues at the Fraser Health OBGYN Grand Rounds, diving into a topic that deserves far more spotlight: Pelvic Health Physiotherapy for Risk Reduction and Management of Obstetric A**l Sphincter Injuries (OASI)

We unpacked:
🟣 The incidence of OASI injuries locally (Fraser Health), provincially (BC), nationally and globally
🟣 The lasting impact these injuries can have on birthers
🟣 How Pelvic Health Physiotherapists play a role in risk reduction, filling a current patient education gap and rehabilitation
🟣 The importance of interdisciplinary collaboration—physios as key players on the birth team
🟣 Our growing integration into the perinatal continuum, including exciting initiatives like the new multidisciplinary Maternal Pelvic Health Clinic at BC Women's Hospital for BCWH patients.

It was a powerful reminder that evidence-based pelvic health care should be a standard part of every birthing journey.

Let’s keep pushing for change—one informed birth at a time. 💪🏽💜

📢✨Advocating for access to quality pelvic health physiotherapy services in BC! PABC has just released its official Position Statement on Pelvic Health Physiotherapy, highlighting the need for improved access and awareness across British Columbia. Here are the key messages:

1️⃣ First-Line Treatment: Pelvic health physiotherapy is an evidence-based, first-line treatment for conditions like urinary and f***l incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, anorectal dysfunction, and pelvic pain. These issues need accessible care across BC.

2️⃣ Lack of Referral Pathways: Currently, there are no established referral pathways for pelvic health physiotherapy in BC. This lack of structure leaves patients without a clear route to get the care they need.

3️⃣ Low Public Awareness: Many people still don’t know that pelvic health physiotherapy is a key, evidence-based treatment option. This knowledge gap is preventing folks from accessing interventions and delaying care.

4️⃣ Access Challenges: Unfortunately, most pelvic health physiotherapy is available only in the private sector, making it unaffordable for many British Columbians. The unequal funding and geographic distribution of providers create significant barriers, especially in rural areas.

5️⃣ Equitable Access Must Be a Priority: It's time to prioritize comprehensive and equitable access to pelvic health physiotherapy for all residents in BC. Every person deserves access to this care, regardless of location or financial means. Let's raise awareness, advocate for structured access, and ensure equitable care for all British Columbians.
