Substance use disorder (SUD) is a serious but treatable condition that affects a person’s brain, behavior, and ability to function in daily life. It can involve alcohol, to***co, opioids, or other drugs and often begins with occasional use that becomes harder to control over time. SUD isn’t a moral failure—it’s a health condition rooted in changes to the brain’s reward system. People with SUD may want to stop but feel unable to, even when they know it’s harming them. The good news is that support, therapy, medication, and recovery communities can help. If you or someone you know is struggling, you’re not alone—help is available, and recovery is possible.
Follow the link below to learn more about SUD, treatment options, and how to take the first step toward recovery.

Addiction is one of the most misunderstood health issues in our society, and it's surrounded by countless myths that fuel stigma, shame, and misinformation. From the false belief that addiction is simply a matter of willpower to the misconception that it only happens to a certain “type” of person, these myths can prevent people from seeking help and receiving the support they need. What’s often overlooked is how deeply addiction and mental health are connected—addiction can both stem from and contribute to conditions like depression, anxiety, and trauma. Understanding the truth is the first step toward compassion, healing, and breaking the cycle.

Struggling to regulate anger more than usual? That’s not just frustration—it can be a sign of burnout, compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, or other occupational stress injuries. These challenges affect First Responders and Front Line Workers in powerful, personal ways—and often ripple out to their families and communities.
Resilience isn’t just about “coping.” Our Beating the Breaking Point program goes beyond simple breathing techniques. This training helps you understand how your brain and body respond to stress and trauma—and gives you practical tools to regain control over your reactions and responses.

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a complex, often misunderstood condition that impacts how a person thinks, feels, and functions. SUD involves an ongoing pattern of using alcohol, to***co, or other drugs despite serious consequences. Over time, substance use can cause long-lasting changes in the brain, making it harder to stop even when the person wants to. Many people begin using substances to feel better, relieve stress, or cope with mental health challenges—but this relief is temporary and can quickly spiral into dependency. Psychiatry.org features an article that explores how SUD develops, how it connects to mental health, the signs to watch for, and the types of treatment and support that are available. With compassion, education, and the right support, recovery is possible—and no one should have to walk that path alone.

Our Story

Many people wander through life feeling stunted, as if they are biding time rather than truly living each moment. Above all, the most common complaint we hear from our clients is that they feel stuck. Stuck in anger, frustration, stress, grief or sadness, in fear, depression or anxiety. Some are stuck in unhealthy relationships or unhealthy patterns of relating to others. For some the feeling of being stuck is new and uncomfortable, for others it has been a lifetime. This can be the result of our life experiences, our past hurts, and the pressure of day to day stressors, leaving a sense of dissatisfaction, irritability, difficulty in relationships and the feeling of being out of control. ThriveLife Counselling & Wellness is a collective of highly skilled clinicians with a shared vision and passion for promoting growth and wellness for the clients we serve. Visit our website to learn more about our counsellors and their areas of specialized practice.
