📵 Be Cautious with Phone Calls and Emails
Scammers often use urgent or emotional language to pressure seniors into acting quickly. Remind them to hang up on suspicious calls or delete strange emails that ask for money or personal details.
✅ A good rule: If something feels off — it probably is.
🌟 Protect Seniors from Scams
Scammers often target seniors with fake calls or emails pretending to be from the government or banks. 🛑
Remind your loved ones: Never share personal or banking info over the phone!

Preventing Falls in Older Adults: How Home Care Can Help in Surrey, BC
Falls are one of the most common reasons older adults in British Columbia lose their independence or require long-term care. At Better Living Home Care Services in Surrey, BC, we see first-hand how a few proactive steps can prevent injuries and keep seniors safe at home.
Whether you or your loved one lives independently or receives home support services, these tips can help reduce the risk of falls — and give families peace of mind.
Why Fall Prevention Matters for Seniors
Falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults in Canada.
One in three Canadians over 65 experiences a fall each year.
Many falls occur in or around the home — places that can easily be made safer with small changes.
At Better Living Home Care Surrey, our caregivers are trained to identify safety risks, assist with mobility, and encourage safe daily routines to prevent falls before they happen.
1. Improve Home Safety
Creating a safer living space is one of the easiest and most effective ways to prevent falls.
Home Care Tips for a Safer Home:
Remove loose rugs, clutter, and cords from walkways.
Install grab bars in bathrooms and near stairs.
Use nightlights in hallways, bathrooms, and bedrooms.
Keep items within easy reach — avoid climbing or stretching.
Ensure shoes and slippers have non-slip soles.
Our home caregivers in Surrey can conduct safety checks during regular visits to ensure each client’s environment is secure.
2. Stay Active and Maintain Strength
Muscle weakness and poor balance are major fall risk factors. Regular movement helps seniors stay strong, flexible, and confident.
Recommended activities for seniors:
Gentle stretching or yoga
Tai Chi or balance classes at local community centres
Short daily walks
Light strength training or resistance band exercises
Our in-home caregivers can encourage and assist with safe daily exercises as part of a personalized home care plan.
3. Check Vision and Hearing Regularly
Changes in vision or hearing can make it harder to detect hazards like steps or uneven flooring.
Schedule annual eye exams.
Keep eyeglass prescriptions up to date.
Ensure hearing aids are working properly.
Home support staff from Better Living Home Care Surrey BC can help schedule appointments and provide transportation assistance.
4. Review Medications and Health Conditions
Some medications can cause dizziness, drowsiness, or balance problems.
Review all medications with your doctor or pharmacist every six months.
Report any side effects like light-headedness or blurred vision.
Stay hydrated and eat balanced meals to prevent weakness.
Our home caregivers monitor changes in mobility and report potential risks early — an important part of senior care services in Surrey.
5. Use Proper Footwear and Mobility Aids
Footwear matters! Shoes should be comfortable, supportive, and non-slip.
If a cane, walker, or wheelchair is needed, ensure it’s properly fitted and in good condition.
Better Living Home Care caregivers are trained to assist with mobility and ensure safety during walks, transfers, and daily routines.
6. Have a Fall Prevention Plan
If a senior has fallen before or feels unsteady, it’s important to take extra precautions:
Schedule a professional fall-risk assessment.
Keep emergency numbers posted in visible areas.
Consider a medical alert system.
Have a caregiver or family member check in daily.
With 24/7 home care options in Surrey, Better Living Home Care ensures that help is always within reach.
