Someone with imposter syndrome can feel inadequate despite their obvious achievements and insist their success is based on luck and not their own competence. Fortunately, there are ways to rewrite this narrative.

In the past, if you lived in a remote or smaller BC community, access to counselling, therapy and mental health services was very limited. It may have been difficult to find a therapist nearby who specialized in your area of concern. Privacy may have been a issue, as often in smaller towns, everyone knows everyone.

With the advent of new technology, you can now access a licensed and registered therapist from anywhere in the province, as long as you have internet access. Teletherapy is also a possibility if you have weak or limited internet access. Both have been proven to be just as effective as in-person therapy.

I'm a registered clinical counsellor in private practice since 2006, and have been providing teletherapy along with in-person therapy since 2006. I began offering online video counselling in 2017 and because of this, have served and continue to serve, clients in many different regions of BC. I'm a contracted service provider for the WorkSafe critical incident stress program, as well as BCEHS, the SPCA and Fraser Health, and have past experience contracting to several EFAP programs, along with extensive work with firefighters, corrections officers and medical professionals. My areas of specialty are trauma, critical incident stress, cumulative stress, PTSD, depression, anxiety, infidelity, separation and divorce, workplace issues, self esteem, and addictions. I utilize cognitive behavioral therapy, EMDR, solution focused therapy, hypnosis and elements from other theoretical orientations in my work with clients.

There are so many people that still aren't aware that counselling can be accessed online from the privacy of their own homes, so it's important to get the word out.

If you'd like to discuss online therapy or book an appointment you can contact me through my website at www.langleycounselling.ca

Blue Monday

My mission for 2023 has become to inform people about ’toxic positivity’

Why? Because social media has brainwashed the majority of the population that this stuff is helpful. It isn’t. At all.

It shuts down conversations
Invalidates genuine feelings
Creates shame
Diminishes impacts of hard/hurtful life experiences
Creates and furthers feelings of disconnect
Furthers and deepens addiction and loneliness
Comes from a place of privilege
Ignores trauma and promotes the idea that we should all shut up about things that hurt us and cause grief
Shuts up those who are suffering to make those who aren’t more comfortable
Denies the reality of the human experience and hard situations
Pretends that life is all about happiness and seeking that, when heartache and sadness are also a part of it
Keeps people from seeking support
Promotes the suck it up buttercup attitude which has been the most harmful attitude to impact mental health we’ve ever seen.

And It’s responsible for really bad mental health outcomes. So if you are a mental health advocate/ see yourself as someone who promotes well being , are telling people you are there to listen, using toxic positivity is doing the reverse of the intent you want.

What is toxic postivity?

Good vibes only
Everything happens for a reason
Best to move forward
I know you’ll be fine
It could be worse
Look on the bright side
Focus on being grateful for what you have
But look at what you do have

Etc, etc, etc.

Why do we have a mental health crisis and high su***de rates? Complex reasons. But sadly, toxic positivity is adding to this. People need to feel heard. They need to feel like someone actually wants to connect to them and try and understand their experience. Human suffering is part of our experience. Let’s not ignore it

Being with, witnessing, acknowledging and standing beside suffering helps the most.
You break your leg and are in immense pain, it’s not gonna help if the first aid person does nothing other than say, it’ll get better, or it could be worse. It’ll help a lot more if they say ‘ I know it hurts, try and breathe through it, more help is coming, squeeze my hand. I’m with you’ and they take some sort of action.

It can make one anxious when another is in pain. Most times the one in pain just wants to know another will be by their side, nothing more.

Is this Bell Let’s Talk Day? It’s either today, or coming soon. But saying let’s talk is useless unless we all really start talking and save the good vibes for when our friends say “ wow, I’m vibing!!! Meeting those vibes where they are is what brings thing up, not diminishing high vibes or ignoring low vibes.

Cheers to being real in 2023
