Family Health Midwives

Family Health Midwives FHM provides prenatal, birth and postpartum care to families in Langley and near surrounding area. W

The midwives at Family Health Clinic are professional clinicians who provide comprehensive perinatal care beginning in early pregnancy, through labour and birth, and includes clinical care for both the birthing parent and their newborn(s) for the first 6 weeks after birth. Midwives are the only perinatal care providers who provide home visits postpartum and the option of home birth for some clients. The midwives are also happy to be able to offer Postpartum Only midwifery care (from after the birth until 6 weeks) to a small number of people, to give even more birthing families access to midwifery support during this very special life transition! Cathy Carlson-Rink ND RM, the clinic's senior midwife has been practicing since 1996 and provides care for a small caseload of midwifery clients alongside having a full-time naturopathic practice. The Family Health Midwives team provides care for 10-14 clients each month, allowing the small team to get to know their clients whilst having regularly scheduled off-call time to spend with their family and friends. The team members are: Ali Spry RM, Fallon Cooper RM, & Misol Kim RM (on maternity leave until 2022), Lourie Rose RM and Natasha Ogelsby RM. The team is grateful to have the support of Cathy Carlson-Rink ND RM, Jennica Rawstron RM & Lourie Rose RM to cover during leave of absences & vacations for the team. We generally recommend inquires for care be made as early in pregnancy as possible, as spaces can fill up very quickly. We still encourage anyone interested in midwifery care, regardless what stage of pregnancy, to reach out, to get on our waitlist, as spaces can frequently open up. The midwives may also be able to offer postpartum care only even if they are full for your due date for pregnancy and birth care.

Meet our new student!

Greetings, My name is Sarah and I am a 3rd year student in the UBC Midwifery Program. I'm excited to be entering a new year and deepening my knowledge and expanding on skills.
My second year was primarily based in outreach midwifery, caring for pregnant women impacted by substance use & violence/abuse. I feel very privileged to have been a part of the client's lives and learned so much more than I expected. Not only about midwifery, but being with people as they navigate the healthcare system as those who usually have barriers to accessing appropriate and safe care.
Previous to midwifery, I worked as a care aide for many years in many different areas, but most passionately in memory (dementia) care and assisted living. I also served families as a doula. My time walking with those at both the beginning and end of the life spectrum has given me a profound appreciation for those who work hard to provide care in these big life moments with skill, grace and compassion.
While originally planning to pursue further into nursing, I was drawn to midwifery after the birth of my second child. The care I received from my midwives led me down a whole new path. I love the midwifery model that provides holistic yet evidence based care, while appreciating that the medical model is not one size fits all. The values of midwifery, built on the tenets of informed choice, resonate deeply with me and I hope to keep those while providing
respectful and individualized care.
When I’m not working on my studies, I can be found making up silly songs, baking cookies or enjoying a good podcast. I love to explore in the woods, or spend time digging on the riverbank with my four kids. Thank you for welcoming me and allowing me to be a part of such a profound life event; your journey during pregnancy, birth and/or the postpartum period. I look forward to meeting you.

Our Story

Family Health Midwives consists of a team of 3 Registered Midwives: Zoë Broersma, Andrea Wallace, and Jennica Rawstron and 1 solo Midwife, Cathy Carlson-Rink ND RM, who takes a limited number of midwifery clients into her care each month.

Midwives are primary care providers, offering autonomous care to expecting families, without a need for a referral, and care if fully covered by MSP.

Midwives provide prenatal care to clients throughout pregnancy (starting around 7-10wks gestation), care through labour and birth, as well as providing postnatal care for approximately 6-8 weeks after the birth, including home visits during the first 7-10 days after birth.

We advise all potential clients to please contact us early in pregnancy (as soon as you know you are pregnant!) as we can book up very quickly! We do also accept clients further along in pregnancy if we have space in their due month, so be sure to inquire with us if you are interested in midwifery care.
