Donna Perry is a mental performance specialist consulting in sport, fitness and life. As a Master of Science in Human Movement and Performance from Western Washington University, with an emphasis in Sport Psychology she consults elite, amateur and professional athletes in most sports. Donna’s approach to mental training follows a multimodal approach which involves assessing the clients internal th

ought process and their environment, and then choosing the most appropriate psychological strategies to aid in empowering their journey through sport. This usually includes the following:
1. Pretreatment phase (assess skills and deficits)
2. Treatment rationale phase (provide reasons for using certain strategies to enhance skills and work through deficits)
3. Skill acquisition (training in muscular relaxation, cognitive restructuring, and self-instruction)
4. Skill rehearsal (programming to provide consistent application and reinforcement of mental skills)

The above approach is utilized to facilitate the development of the mental skills necessary to experience sport and life pursuits with enjoyment and success. She works mainly in the areas of goal setting, anxiety/stress management, dealing effectively with pressure, visualization and relaxation strategies, mental performance routines and time management.

Your attitude determines your path ~ it is up to you to decide how you want to show up and which direction you want to go in. No one outside can control you inwardly! You are in control of the choices you make and how much effort you want to put into something. You have control over your thoughts which affect your actions. Make up “in your mind” which path you want to take and commit to it! No one can determine this for you.

Your attitude determines your path ~ it is up to you to decide how you want to show up and which direction you want to go in. No one outside can control you inwardly! You are in control of the choices you make and how much effort you want to put into something. You have control over your thoughts which affect your actions. If you want a result you need to believe it can happen. To believe it you must first see it in your “minds eye”. Imagine yourself in that place you want to be, receiving that award, standing on a podium, making a team. See your dream! Make it come alive with all of your senses. The more you see the outcome the more likely it will happen for you. Make your dream a reality. Of course you can take small steps to get there, but be sure to call up the image of being where you want to be and doing what you want to do to make it real. Visualize the outcome. See it on your mind and you will record it. ❤️

It has been a challenging year for many. So many pressures coming out of a pandemic and moving back into sport...some sports are making that transition quicker than others depending on the level of play. We need to be there for our athletes more than ever. This is a massive adjustment, mentally, developmentally and emotionally.

Consistency is key 🔑 Embrace your inner-self whole heartedly. We are not what social media makes of us...we are real, authentic true to our self. Our energy from within affects those around us. Draw on kind thoughts, look within to make a difference and make decisions with warmth and caring for yourself first and eventually this will affect those around you for the positive. Too often we ignore the signs of stress and how social media affects our day to day interactions. Take time for you. Don’t ignore those warning signs. If you are feeling off, draw on those feelings...centre, focus, breathe in and release it all. Those negatives thoughts do not serve you. You are real, genuine, kind, gracious, caring, warm and can make a difference. It starts from within.

Are you a perfinker?! You perceive think and feel your way through life. Everything you see, think, say or feel becomes your reality as your thoughts are tied to your emotions. Becoming conscious of your thoughts can help you to get back in touch with your reality! Find something beautiful you appreciate, be mindful, practice acts of kindness, live life with gratitude, move your body joyfully and the way that “feels” right for you.

One of the biggest obstacles is the belief that we can’t do something. Or that were not good enough. Or that we don’t meet the perfect standards of our sport or our school or our work. Give up the societal pressures to be perfect and focus on what brings you joy! If you play a sport that demands technical excellence and the focus is on that...choose to focus on what you enjoy most about that sport as it is “in-the moment” experiences that win over your love and your love for the sport, for yourself and for performance in whatever you are doing is the single most important facet. Then your standards will be met. We seek validation from others when if fact we should be seeking it from ourselves. What appears perfect on the outside may in fact not be perfect on the inside, so don’t be disillusioned by this. Work on gaining self-confidence that radiates from the inside out and everything else will follow. Be proud of who you are and what you stand for, know your values and stand by them. “BE YOU” as their is no one who can ever replace the true authentic you!
