A lot goes into choosing a hearing clinic to address any hearing concerns you may have.
A few things to consider -

1. Make sure they’re properly qualified

Look for a licensed Registered Hearing Instrument Practitioner. A Registered Hearing Instrument Practitioner (RHIP) is a licensed healthcare professional specializing in testing adult hearing, and selecting, fitting, and dispensing hearing aids

2. Check experience and reputation

Look at Google reviews and testimonials.

Ask friends/family or your doctor for referrals.

Choose a clinic with a track record, not just flashy ads.

• Use Hearing Protection: Wear earplugs (foam or custom-molded) or earmuffs when exposed to loud noise, such as power tools, lawnmowers, concerts, or fi****ms.
• Follow the 60/60 Rule: Listen to music at no more than 60% volume for a maximum of 60 minutes at a time
• Use Noise-Canceling Headphones: These help reduce ambient noise, allowing you to listen at lower, safer volumes, particularly on planes or public transit.
• Get Distance: Move away from loud noise sources, such as speakers at events.
• Monitor Sound Levels: Use smartphone apps to measure decibel levels and identify hazardous environments.
• Give Your Ears a Rest: Take quiet breaks after being in a loud environment.

Staying active can help prevent and manage cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes while also improving mental health and reducing the risk of depression and anxiety.

Hearing aids can support an active lifestyle in many ways.

-Enhanced Safety: Better awareness of surroundings, such as cars while running or cycling, is crucial for outdoor exercise.
-Improved Communication: Clearer hearing in group fitness classes, sports, or while chatting with a partner prevents isolation and improves engagement.
-Technological Integration: Bluetooth-enabled aids stream audio, podcasts, or, in some cases, track fitness metrics directly.
-Improved Confidence & Motivation: Removing the frustration of hearing loss encourages participation in social, active, and, for many, previously avoided activities.

Hearing loss often develops slowly and can be easy to overlook. Watch for these common signs:

-Turning up the volume on the TV, phone, or radio higher than usual
-Difficulty following conversations in noisy environments or group settings
-Struggling to hear clearly in restaurants, meetings, or crowded places
-Avoiding social situations due to frustration or difficulty keeping up
-Family or friends commenting on your hearing before you notice it yourself

If any of these are occurring, a hearing evaluation would be recommended.

Call us at 604-427-2828 to book an appointment.

Communication tips for hearing loss -

-Face the Speaker: Ensure you have the person's attention and are looking directly at them to use visual cues.
-Reduce Background Noise: Turn off TVs or radios and close windows to minimize distractions.
-Speak Clearly: Use a normal volume and clear articulation; shouting can distort words.
-Rephrase, Don't Repeat: If a phrase is not understood, rephrase it using simpler words.
-Use Technology: Utilize captioning for TV, video calls, and telephone conversations.

When people begin exploring hearing care, it’s natural to turn to large chains advertising low prices.
However, in the hearing industry – independent, locally owned clinics operate differently, with a primary focus on providing personalized care and service to the individual sitting in front of them.
“Hearing care is never one-size-fits-all,” explains Kim Galick, owner and registered hearing instrument specialist at Ears Hearing Clinic. “It’s about understanding someone’s lifestyle, their challenges and what matters most to them day to day.”
Manufacturer-owned or franchise clinics are often limited to specific hearing aid brands, whereas independent clinics will typically work with multiple different manufacturers, allowing them to make recommendations based purely on the patient’s needs, preferences and budget.
Hearing care for today … and tomorrow
Continuity of care also matters. Hearing care doesn’t involve a single appointment. It involves testing, fittings, fine-tuning and on-going follow-ups.
“When we see someone, we’re thinking about long-term success, not just today’s appointment,” Galick says. “We want our patients to hear well months and years from now.”
While large chains promote bulk pricing, independent clinics remain competitive while offering comprehensive aftercare – including adjustments, cleanings and support without the added pressure to upsell.
Deep roots based on long-term relationships
Ears Hearing Clinic is deeply rooted in the community. Their reputation and loyal client base has grown over the years through word of mouth and genuine relationships.
Hearing is a key part of your day-to-day life and is closely connected to the quality of life as we get older – from conversations at family dinners to engaging with clients at work. Choosing an independent and locally owned clinic means choosing care built on flexibility, transparency and long-term relationships.
