Appropriate pasture and grazing management are key elements of successful cattle operations. Check out the points below for tips on grazing management!

😴REST is crucial to prevent overgrazing. Overgrazing occurs when cattle are left on the pasture for too long or are brought to the pasture too soon. Rule of thumb: have a rest period of a minimum of 6 weeks.

🌿Another rule of thumb for grazing is "take half, leave half". Use 50% of the key available forage species in a stand and then move cattle. This will help to allow adequate rest and minimize large species changes in the stand that can be caused by overgrazing.

📝Grazing plans are great tools to help keep you on track throughout the grazing season. Every grazing plan is unique to each operations' resources and goals. Take the time to consider your grazing resources, your herds needs and how those two can be aligned.

Thank you for following along with our forage tips during the month of March! Reach out to us on Facebook or contact your Blair's retail location for more information on forage management!

Do you have an existing forage stand that has been declining in productivity? Fertilization can help bring your stand back to life!

🚜Fertilization can be especially beneficial for haylands because of the large amount of biomass that is removed each year through haying and baling.

📋First, a soil test should be done for your hayland to determine which nutrients are deficient and to create your fertilization plan.

🌱Ideally, fertilizer should be banded below the soil surface to increase nutrient utilization. Banding should be done when the plants are dormant, and soil is moist.

💧Broadcasting fertilizer is another option but is very dependent on moisture to breakdown the fertilizer and make it available. Proper timing of broadcasting is crucial.

Contact your local Blair's retail for more information on fertilizer options for rejuvenating a forage stand!

Once you've determined the forage species you'll be seeding, it's time to focus on successful seeding for optimum forage establishment!

Follow these tips for successful FORAGE ESTABLISHMENT:

🌿 W**d control in the years leading up to seeding forages is essential to decrease the w**d bank; therefore, decreasing competition for the forage seedling.

💦 Soil moisture should be considered when determining timing of seeding. Forages require adequate moisture for successful germination.

🚜 Preparing the seedbed to ensure optimum seed to soil contact is crucial. The seedbed should be smooth, well-packed, moist and w**d free.

📋 Proper seeding depth & rate are critical for the successful establishment of forages. Seeding depth & rate will vary depending on the soil type, forage type, soil moisture, etc.

MARCH IS FORAGE MONTH!

Selecting the right forage species can be a tricky process. There are many factors to consider, such as:

🌾 Environmental Conditions. What's the soil type and annual precipitation? Is it drought prone, flood prone, or saline?

🌾 Intended Use. Will it be used for spring grazing, silage, hay, or fall grazing?

🌾 How often will it be harvested/ grazed?

🌾 How long will the stand be in production?

🌾 What are the specific herd needs?

❗Contact your Blair's sales representative to book your forage seed before the end of March to ensure you receive maximum savings!
