I am frequently asked about orthopedic footwear coverage through insurance. If you have footwear coverage make sure to call your provider and specifically ask what type of shoes you are covered for. Custom made or off the shelf? There is a massive difference in the cost and need for either type of shoe.
Custom made shoes cost thousands of dollars and are primarily for feet that don't fit within the parameters of mass produced off the shelf shoes.
Some examples are unusually large, small and/or wide feet; uniquely shaped feet; feet of significantly different size from one another; shoes that need to accommodate custom leg braces, etc.

Foot FAQ/Fact Friday
Q: House shoes to keep your feet comfortable

A: Investing in a pair of indoor footwear can go a long way to help keep you comfortable indoors. It is increasingly common for homes to have hardwood floors and ceramic tiles instead of plush carpets to walk on, leaving our feet achy and sore.

The gold standard would be to have a second set of your best footwear for indoor use, but often times a good compromise can be found as we may not put the same stress on our feet at home as we do out and about all day.

Stick with something easy to wear – a slipper or sandal are always a convenient option to slide on and off with easy as needed. From there, try to mimic your walking shoes as much as possible; a rubber sole, EVA midsole and some kind of supportive insole go a long way towards comfort. Sandals with built-in support can be transitioned from outdoor to indoor, and vice versa, as seasons change. If you have specific comfort concerns, your Canadian Certified Pedorthist can help you pick out the right type of indoor shoes to meet your needs!

Foot FAQ/Fact Friday

Q: Why are my toes numb?

A: A common cause of numbness of the toes, is when the arch at the ball of the foot collapses. This collapsed arch can cause irritation of a nerve that passes between the toes.

To help solve this problem, support for the arches can make a difference. The support helps to relieve the pressure on the nerve running to the toes.

Foot FAQ/Fact Friday

Q: Do I need a good shoe if I already wear orthotics?

A: Yes, a good shoe is beneficial when you wear orthotics. There are a couple of reasons for this:

The orthotic needs to fit in the shoe properly. If the shoe is too narrow at the heel or the arch, the orthotic will not fit right, and it will not sit flat. This can create pressure in areas where there shouldn’t be, leading to an uncomfortable experience.

An improper shoe can reduce the support the orthotic is providing or overcorrect the foot. These features can either combat what the orthotic is trying to do or add too much control and push the foot where it is not comfortable.

Orthotics work best in a proper shoe because when they fit right, they work together for the best results.

Foot FAQ/Fact Friday

Q: Back to school foot tips for teachers 🍎

A: Teachers are on their feet a lot and are more at risk for developing achy feet and legs.

Although a running or walking shoe would provide the most comfort, a dress shoe can be comfortable at times. When opting for dress shoes, make sure any heel is less than 2” and the heel should be almost as wide as your heel for stability. The higher the heel on the shoe, the more pressure that is put on the ball of the feet. Also, make sure that the toe of the shoe is wide enough to prevent compression. A thicker sole and insole is another way to protect your feet during the day.

Other tests to make sure the shoe is supportive and comfortable are:
1. Insole test: Take the insole out of the shoe and stand on it. No part of the foot should be over the side of the insole. If your foot is not the same shape as the shoe, it will cause early wear on the shoe and an increased chance of injuries.
2. Comfort: The shoe should be comfortable when you put it on.
3. Toe wiggle room: Make sure there is about a thumb thickness beyond the longest toe, and make sure there is room top to bottom so your toes are not tight in the shoe.
4. Snug heel: A snug heel will keep the heel in place, but make sure it is not digging into your foot.
5. Adjustable closure: A lace up or Velcro closure allows you to adjust the shoe to fit your foot.
6. Removable insoles: These are preferred to adjust the fit of the shoe, and allow extra arch support when necessary.
7. Cushioning: This is great for shock absorption, but too much can be detrimental to balance.

If you have any questions about your feet, talk to your local Canadian Certified Pedorthist. You can find one at https://www.pedorthic.ca/.
