How to play with puzzles (the SLP way) 🧩✨

Here’s how to turn a simple puzzle into a speech session at home:
1️⃣ Give choices“Horse or cow?”Choices increase participation and reduce pressure.

2️⃣ Sound imitation“Baaa!” “Moo!” “Neigh!”Early sounds build the foundation for words.

3️⃣ Use cloze phrases“The horse says…”Pause. Wait. Let them fill it in.

4️⃣ Create opportunities to requestHold a piece and wait. They’ll learn that communication gets results.

5️⃣ Point + labelModel: “Horse!” “Big cow!” “Red barn!”
Repetition builds vocabulary.
You don’t need flashcards.You don’t need special toys.You just need intention. 💛

Wondering how many words your toddler should be saying? 👶💬

Language development can vary, but there are some general milestones that help us know when things are on track. And remember — every child develops at their own pace but if you’re unsure, early support can make a BIG difference 💙✨

Creating a language-rich home environment doesn’t require special tools — it starts with simple, meaningful interactions every day. 💬

Through everyday routines, play, and shared experiences, children build the foundation for strong communication skills. ✨

Encourage back-and-forth interactions, model language naturally, and make conversations a part of your daily rhythm. Small moments truly make a big impact. 💛

The OWL (Observe–Wait–Listen) strategy is all about giving children time to initiate communication on their own.

👀 Observe what they’re interested in

⏳ Wait—pause, be present, and don’t jump in too fast

👂 Listen for words, sounds, gestures, or eye gaze

This approach supports natural, child-led communication. Spontaneous words often happen when we step back and let the child take the lead.

How parents can use OWL at home:

• Sit face-to-face during play so your child can easily look at you

• Follow their interests instead of directing the activity

• Pause before asking questions or naming objects—let them have the first turn

• Respond to any communication attempt (sounds, gestures, facial expressions) as if it’s meaningful

• Wait a few extra seconds before jumping in—those extra moments often create the opportunity for initiation

When we slow down and share the moment with the child, communication naturally has room to grow. ✨

Every day, I feel grateful to do a job that’s rooted in connection, growth and little moments that matter. 💙

Watching children find their voice and supporting families along the way is truly the best part of being an SLP.

As pediatric speech-language pathologists, play is at the heart of everything we do 🧸💬

Every toy, every interaction, and every routine is chosen intentionally to target communication goals.

✨Play helps children learn to take turns, ask for help, express emotions, and connect language to real experiences — all while feeling engaged and confident.

Because when therapy feels fun, progress comes naturally 💙
