šŸŽāœļø The first week of school is here! Backpacks are packed, routines are coming together, and kids are settling back into the classroom.

šŸ‘€ But here’s something many parents don’t realize: 80% of learning is visual. Clear vision is one of the most important tools your child needs for a successful school year.

Watch for these signs that your child may need glasses or an eye exam:

Squinting or covering one eye

Headaches or eye strain after school

Trouble seeing the board

Losing their place while reading

Sitting too close to books or screens

Even if there are no obvious signs, kids may not know what ā€œnormalā€ vision looks like — that’s why routine, OHIP-covered eye exams are so important.

āœ… Book your child’s exam this fall at one of our 10 conveniently located Kniaziew Optometry clinics across Southwestern Ontario. Let’s start the school year with clear vision and confident learning!

Thank you to CTV News for highlighting why regular eye exams are so important. This story is a powerful reminder that optometrists don’t just protect vision—they can also save lives.

And with back-to-school season here, it’s the perfect time to book an eye exam for your child. Early detection makes all the difference.

As your child heads back to the classroom, don’t forget that healthy vision is key to learning, confidence, and growth. Many eye conditions like lazy eye, crossed eyes, nearsightedness, and convergence issues can develop quietly — sometimes with no obvious signs.

Early detection makes all the difference. With the right care, issues can be treated, slowed, or managed before they impact your child’s learning and development. And the best part? In Ontario, children’s eye exams are OHIP-covered every 12 months until age 20!

šŸ“Œ Why book an exam now?Catch silent vision problems before they affect school performanceStart treatments early to prevent long-term issuesSupport your child’s confidence and comfort in the classroom

šŸŽÆ The perfect time to book your child’s comprehensive eye exam is now — right before the school year starts!

Book an exam today at any of our 10 Kniaziew Optometry clinics and give your child the gift of clear vision this school year.

We’re so grateful to have had Sausan Hamad join us for her 3.5-month optometry clerkship as part of her journey with the University of Waterloo School of Optometry & Vision Science. Her energy, curiosity, and positive spirit were felt across all of our clinics — and she made a lasting impression on both our team and our patients.

Here’s what she had to say about her time with us:

ā€œI’m incredibly thankful for the opportunity to have spent the last 3.5 months learning and growing across multiple clinics during my optometry clerkship. From the very first day, the doctors and staff welcomed me with kindness, support, and so much knowledge. Their mentorship has made a lasting impact on both my clinical skills and confidence as a future OD. What stood out most was the genuine care and dedication they showed toward every patient. It was clear that patient well-being was always their top priority. From challenging cases to meaningful patient interactions, this rotation has deepened my passion for eye care and has shaped me to become a better future clinician. I'm excited to see what the rest of my optometric journey has in store! Thank you to everyone at Kniaziew Optometry!ā€

We’re excited to see what’s next for you, Sausan — we know the future is bright! 🌟

Every summer, wildfires cause more smoke in the air across Canada.

That smoke can irritate your eyes — so here are 4 quick tips to help keep them comfortable and protected when air quality is poor:

Check the air quality
Look up the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) for your area — it’s a simple number that tells you how clean or polluted the air is and how it might affect your health. When the number is high, it’s best to limit outdoor time.

Stay indoors
Keep windows closed, use A/C on recirculate, and avoid indoor smoke.

Shield your eyes outside
If you need to be out, wear sunglasses to block irritating particles and reduce exposure.

Have questions or eye irritation? Call us!
Our team at Kniaziew Optometry is here to help. With 10 conveniently located clinics across Southwestern Ontario, we’re ready to answer all your eye care questions.

Catch Dr. Mastronardi, as he breaks down what cataracts are. A special thanks to Mark Donnison, CEO of the Ontario Association of Optometrists , for guiding this enlightening conversation.

Key Cataract Insights:

Cataracts: Clouding of the eye’s lens affecting vision clarity.

Types: Age-related, congenital, traumatic, and secondary.
