Halloween is fun — but don’t let your eyes pay the price! Here’s how to stay safe:

Costume Safety – Make sure masks don’t block vision and avoid sharp objects. Check any eye injuries immediately.

Safe Make-up – Stick to hypoallergenic, eye-approved products. Avoid unsafe “red” effects near the eyes.

Be Seen After Dark – Use reflective tape, LED lights, or flashlights to stay visible.

Thinking about becoming an Optometrist?

Meet Brooke Latour, a third-year Medical Sciences student at Brock University who recently spent time shadowing Dr. Kniaziew at Kniaziew Optometry.

Brooke shared:

“Job shadowing Dr. Kniaziew was an incredibly valuable and enjoyable experience. He treats all his patients with kindness and created numerous learning opportunities for me. The entire staff were welcoming, supportive, and helpful as well. Overall, Kniaziew Optometry was a fantastic team to work with, and I cannot wait for my future experiences with them!”

Brooke plans to apply to the University of Waterloo’s School of Optometry next year and has already completed over 50 hours of shadowing experience. She also leads Vision Plus, a volunteer program that provides free vision screenings to elementary students across the Niagara region.

At Kniaziew Optometry, we’re always excited to welcome high school or undergraduate students who are curious about a future in optometry and want to see what a day in the life of an Optometrist is really like.

What a day! 💪✨ Yesterday, women from near and far came together for the 12th Annual Women’s 100, hosted by CYCLE CULTURE & Kim Rocheleau. From the 100-minute Urban Ride to the 100 km Road Ride, every pedal stroke was proof of strength, community, and the power of women’s cycling. 🚴‍♀️🌸

We’re so grateful to have had Sausan Hamad join us for her 3.5-month optometry clerkship as part of her journey with the University of Waterloo School of Optometry & Vision Science. That smoke can irritate your eyes — so here are 4 quick tips to help keep them comfortable and protected when air quality is poor:

Check the air quality
Look up the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) for your area — it’s a simple number that tells you how clean or polluted the air is and how it might affect your health. When the number is high, it’s best to limit outdoor time.

Stay indoors
Keep windows closed, use A/C on recirculate, and avoid indoor smoke.

Shield your eyes outside
If you need to be out, wear sunglasses to block irritating particles and reduce exposure.
