Beginning Wednesday September 21, Alberta residents 18 years and older will be eligible for the bivalent vaccine if they have:
Completed any primary series, including a mix of AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, and at least five (5) months have passed since their last dose or most recent infection.
Received any number of previous boosters and at least five (5) months have passed since the last dose or most recent infection.
The bivalent COVID-19 vaccine triggers a stronger immune response and provides additional protection against both Omicron and the original SARS-CoV-2 virus strain.
Albertans who have completed a primary series are eligible for the bivalent vaccine. The recommended interval is a minimum of five (5) months from the last dose or previous infection.
A shortened interval of three (3) months can be considered (e.g. for individuals at higher risk for severe outcomes), although a longer interval leads to a better immune response against COVID-19 infection that is expected to last longer. Patients should not be turned away if they still choose a shortened interval.
Please note that if an Albertan would like to receive the bivalent booster at an interval between three (3) and five (5) months, they will need to contact their local pharmacy directly or can call Health Link at 811, as the Alberta Vaccine Booking System (AVBS) will only support spacing of five (5) months. Pharmacies can also provide the bivalent booster at an interval between three (3) and five (5) months during walk-in appointments if requested.
