“When we’re talking about sunglasses, it’s not just a fashion statement,” Dr. Mona Ubhi, an optometrist with Beyond Vision in Edmonton, said in an interview on Friday.

“We’re really thinking about the health of the eyes overall and thinking about the long-term effects,” she said, adding that the key is choosing sunglasses that say UV400 or 100 per cent UV protection.

According to Ubhi, conditions like cataracts, macular degeneration and skin cancer near the eyes can show up over time from sun exposure. While acute conditions like photokeratitis, a sunburn on the cornea, can be quite painful with redness, tearing and temporary vision loss.

How to Prevent Sunburned Eyes:
🌞 Wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection.
⛱️ Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat for added shade.
🎿 Reflective surfaces like water, sand, or snow can double your UV exposure—always protect your eyes, even when it’s cloudy.

Treating Sunburned Eyes:
💕 If your eyes feel gritty or sensitive to light, rest in a dark room and use lubricating eye drops to stay comfortable.
💧 A cool compress can also help soothe irritation.
