June is National Indigenous History Month, an opportunity for governments, organizations, and individuals to share information and raise awareness and understanding about Indigenous contributions to this country. What must also be shared are the hard truths in Canadian history, including the lesser-known fact that many Métis children were part of the residential school experience and have not been recognized by the federal or provincial governments. For generations, Métis children were taken from their homes and forced to attend residential institutions whose mandate was to remove tradition, culture, and language from students and replace them with colonial ways. As part of your learning this month, MN–S encourages you to educate yourself about the history of residential schools. One of many is the Île-à-la-Crosse Residential School that was in operation from 1806 until 1976. You can learn more about the school and the devastating impacts that have lasted generations at United4Survivors.ca. Support Survivors as they call for recognition and justice. Take action.
