When things start to feel overwhelming, taking a self-compassion break is a powerful way to offer ourselves support. This practice was developed by Dr. Kristin Neff, a renowned expert in self-compassion. It involves three core components: mindfulness, common humanity, and self-kindness.
To take a self-compassion break, begin by bringing the difficult situation to mind. Notice if you can actually feel the stress or emotional discomfort in your body. Then gently say to yourself:
"This is a moment of overwhelm.
We all struggle in our lives.
May I be kind to myself.
May I be patient."
