TMJ Syndrome or (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction)
•
TMJ syndrome refers to dysfunction or irritation of the temporomandibular joint, the hinge that connects your jaw to the side of your skull. This joint is responsible for talking, chewing, and opening or closing the mouth. When the joint itself, or the surrounding muscles, become strained, inflamed, or misaligned, you may develop some of the symptoms listed above. TMJ issues are often linked to muscle tension, clenching/grinding, poor posture, or stress.
•
So why does massage therapy help TMJ syndrome?
•
Massage therapy can help TMJ syndrome because the condition often involves tight or overworked muscles around the jaw, face, neck, and shoulders. When these muscles become tense, they place extra pressure on the joint and worsen symptoms.
•
Massage supports TMJ relief by:
✨Reducing muscle tension in the masseter, temporalis, and surrounding neck muscles
✨Improving circulation which decreases inflammation and discomfort
✨Enhancing joint mobility by loosening restricted soft tissues
✨Lowering stress which can reduce clenching and grinding habits
✨Balancing muscle function which helps the jaw move more smoothly and comfortably
•
Overall, massage therapy helps calm irritated tissues, restore normal movement, and reduce the pain associated with TMJ dysfunction.
