Why private speech therapy?
1. More frequent and longer sessions:
• As a parent/caregiver, you can choose how frequently your child receives private speech therapy. You may choose a more intensive treatment schedule over a short period of time (e.g., twice per week) or a less intensive treatment schedule over a longer period of time (e.g., twice a month). Treatment schedules can be discussed with your SLP to determine what is best for your child.
• Our speech-language therapy sessions are 60 minutes in length. This allows plenty of time to target all your child’s goals.
• Frequency and duration of services provided in the schools varies depending on availability of professionals and support staff. When children are receiving speech therapy at school it is usually only for short 10 minute sessions. Students may be placed on a waiting list and not receive speech therapy for extended periods of time during the school year, resulting in regression and loss of skills.
2. More family involvement:
• As a parent/caregiver you will be actively involved in the therapy process from the beginning. The SLP will seek your input on communication goals to ensure we are targeting skills that are important to your child and your family.
• Parents/caregivers are able to participate actively in private speech therapy sessions so they learn how to target their child’s goals at home.
3. Faster progress:
• Research shows that children reach their goals more quickly when they receive frequent therapy sessions because it allows for more repetition and practice with their goals.
• Parent involvement also facilitates faster progress and greater skill generalization because children will be working on their communication goals outside of speech sessions and with individuals other than the SLP.
4. Individualized treatment provided in the child’s own environment:
• Private speech therapy allows for highly individualized treatment plans to be created. All sessions are one-on-one with a licensed SLP.
• Wild Rose Speech Therapy provides home-based speech-language services, allowing children to learn in their natural home environment where they spend most of their time. This provides a better opportunity to generalize their skills.
5. Everyone is eligible:
• With private speech therapy, anyone can receive intervention, regardless of severity. If you have concerns about your child’s speech and language, that is enough reason to pursue treatment. We will work with your child no matter how “mild” their errors might seem to others.
• Unfortunately, recent funding and program changes have impacted how speech-language services are provided in the health and school systems. Your child may no longer qualify for speech therapy based on their age, severity, and areas of difficulty.
