Deactivating strategies, within attachment theory, are the mental/emotional “shortcuts” people use to reduce closeness or emotional intensity when they feel overwhelmed or threatened in relationships.
Deactivating strategies are protective maneuvers people use (often unconsciously) to down-regulate closeness, emotional intensity, or dependence on others.
They’re most strongly associated with avoidant attachment, but each attachment style has its own way of “turning down” connection when it feels risky.
