♥️ St. John’s Wort info ♥️

During a recent conversation with a colleague, I reminisced about the rise and fall of St. John’s Wort for helping to ease depression. In the mid 1990’s, it even made the cover of Time magazine. There was a solid evidence base that for people with milder forms of depression, St. John’s wort could be very helpful and with fewer side effects than their pharmaceutical counterparts. But by the late 1990s, researchers also found that the herb could interact with some very powerful and important drugs, particularly those that are used to prevent rejection of a transplanted organ, such as a heart or kidney. It was staggering how quickly it fell from grace. There have now been more than 40 studies conducted on St. John’s wort, with the vast majority showing it is a safe and effective herb for milder forms of depression. While it should be used with caution in those who are taking certain prescription drugs, that doesn’t make St. John’s wort dangerous or unsafe. Grapefruit interacts with exactly the same drug metabolizing enzyme as St. John’s wort, yet no one is calling for it to be banned and there is no warning label on the juice. I believe that St. John’s wort can play a role as part of a broader holistic approach to addressing depression. We are far too quick to prescribe medications in the United States, particularly for more minor problems that would be best addressed by lifestyle strategies and gentle remedies.
