Repetitive strain injury is typically caused by rapid, repeated use of muscles and joints. It can affect anyone from athletes, trade workers and people who engage in computer use and crafts such as knitting.

Taking care of yourself allows you to recharge and rejuvenate, leading to increased productivity, improved concentration and better problem-solving abilities. When you prioritize your well-being, you have more energy and mental clarity to tackle daily tasks.

It's often easier to notice when someone else around us needs help but not ourselves.

Try making self-care a part of your routine by starting small. Make small promises to yourself like: I will take 5 minutes every morning to meditate, and I'll take a 15-minute walk during my lunch break every day. For some, the morning may be best, others at the end of the. Find the time of day that works for you and fill it with something just for you. It doesn't need to be long or expensive. 5 minutes focusing on your breathing or listening to a great song sometimes is all you need.

When getting ready to go back to school, students and their parents should take the time to choose the right backpack. Poorly designed or improperly worn packs can cause discomfort and even injury. Ontario’s chiropractors consider overloaded backpacks to be a leading cause of back and neck pain.

Tips for choosing the right backpack:
✏️The size should be proportionate to the wearer’s body size -the top of the backpack should be no higher than the top of the shoulder and the bottom no lower than the top of the hipbone.
✏️It should be lightweight and durable.
✏️The shoulder straps should be at least two inches wide, adjustable, and padded -they should not fit too snugly around and under the arms.
✏️The back should be padded for added protection and comfort.
✏️It should have a hip strap or waist belt to help reduce the strain on the back
✏️It should have several pockets to help to distribute the weight evenly

Tips for backpack wearers:
🩵Wear both straps and adjust them so that the pack fits snugly—you should be able to slide your hand between the backpack and your back.
🩵Don’t sling your backpack on one side— it puts excess stress on your neck, shoulder, and back.
🩵Don’t carry your backpack too low— it will make you lean forward and puts the weight on your upper back.
🩵Finally, and most importantly, don’t overload your backpack!

Keeping these tips in mind when choosing a backpack you can ensure both safety and comfort for your child.
