To The Core Pilates and Nutrition is a locally owned studio that turns 17 this year!

Located just west of the downtown core we are massive supporters of our local charities as well as huge advocates for Discover Lloydminster and Think Lloyd First programs. Owned and operated by Donna Schellenberg, we began as a small family oriented facility which has grown with her own family over the years. We treat our clients as a part of our family and believe everyone that steps through our doors deserves the absolute best of what we have to offer. Our purpose has always been to awaken a life of limitless joy in others. Although that may sound strange to some, our clients have overcome massive obstacles that impacted every area of their lives. When you're in pain it's tough to enjoy life. It's difficult to move well, do the activities you love with the people you love the most. Often pain impacts incomes and jobs. Most often it impacts our relationships, our sense of self worth and our confidence. Finding joy in moving again gives people back their freedom and a new outlook for the future. We are proud to help people do just that. At To the Core Pilates & Nutrition it is our mission to encourage lifestyle choices that will improve health over the long term and to improve the quality of life of every client. We offer Therapeutic Pilates and specialize in pre and post natal health as well as post rehab care for hip and knee replacements as well as spinal issues such as scoliosis or disc herniations. To the Core also offers personalized Nutrition Coaching. We work with you to develop smart, effective eating choices to meet your fitness and health goals. Together, we will develop and analyze your habits, dietary needs, and track your progress with the support and resources you need. We believe in creating healthy and sustainable habits that last a lifetime and creating realistic goals and expectations for ourselves. No quick fixes or "no pain, no gain" workouts to be found here. We teach our clients to be proactive about their health, listen to their own bodies and to become advocates for their own health and wellness.

I’ve heard those words more times than I can count.

As a teen, I tore both Achilles tendons and was told:
🚫 No running

🚫 No sports I loved

Slow Down... and Tune In

Lately, there’s been so much attention on somatic movement - Pilates, yoga, breath-work, myofascial release, and other mind-body practices. And for good reason.

We’re discovering more than ever how powerful the brain is in supporting healing. The placebo effect is a perfect example, it’s all in your head, literally! Science continues to confirm that the mind-body connection can create transformative changes throughout the entire system.

In the fitness world, having "abs of steel" or a "six-pack" is often seen as the ultimate goal. However, if your belly pushes out or forms a dome shape when you engage your core, it's a sign that something isn't quite right. While this issue might go unnoticed outside of the Pilates community, it can be a key indicator of muscle imbalance or dysfunction.

There are several reasons this might happen. The re**us abdominis - the “six-pack” muscle - is the most superficial layer of the abdominal wall. If it’s significantly stronger than the deeper core muscles, it can overpower them during exercise, causing the belly to push outward instead of drawing in. Poor breathing mechanics or breath-holding during movement can also contribute. Additionally, this doming can occur during or after pregnancy due to diastasis recti, a separation of the abdominal muscles.

Understanding how all layers of your abdominals work together is essential for building lasting core strength and maintaining function as you age. The good news? This issue is fixable.

First, it starts with awareness, recognizing that the problem exists. Next, you’ll need to improve your breathing technique. Finally, strengthening the deeper layers of your core is crucial, as they provide stability and support for movement.

In Pilates, we focus on building strength from the inside out. This approach helps you move with better support, which means fewer injuries, reduced pain, and healthier movement patterns overall. It’s an excellent complement to other forms of exercise and can enhance both performance and longevity.
