Do you have a Newborn baby who doesn’t let you sleep?😴

Let’s talk about normal newborn sleep and what to expect:

Newborns sleep a lot in the first few weeks of life, 16-18 hours on average per day, they have frequent wakings and rarely sleep longer than 3 hour stretches.
🌞Many newborns get their days and nights confused making things more complicated.🌛

Understanding the Science behind newborn sleep can help you initiate healthy sleep habits right from the start.

During pregnancy, the fetus will follow moms physiological cues about day and night, as well as following her internal clock. Maternal melatonin , our sleep hormone, crosses the placenta and may directly affect the fetus’ internal clock. When the infant is born, they lose that hormonal connection to mom and are now responsible for their circadian rhythm: which takes time to develop!
Infants can take 12-16 weeks to develop day and night circadian rhythms.

❇️This means that most infants before 12 weeks will likely sleep without a detectable pattern. It is very normal for a newborn to sleep anywhere from 20 minutes up to 3 to 4 hours at a time.

Strategies to help your little on develop their circadian rhythm:

✳️ Frequently feed your little one throughout the day, instead of feeding every 3 to 4 hours, you can try feeding every 2 hours throughout the day. Having more wakeful periods during the day can bring more consolidated sleep at night.
✳️ Help your infant establish their rhythm by making them a part of your daytime routines; interactions, visits and spending time outdoors going for a walk in the sunshine.
✳️ Open those blinds in the morning and let that natural light shine in, as this helps signal to your little one’s brain that it is daytime.
✳️ In the evening around 8 pm each night, decrease the stimulation in your house by closing the blinds, dining the lights and decreasing activity levels. In the night when your little one wakes to feed, keep feeding with minimal interactions and use a dim light (red, orange or yellow tone). This can help your little one learn that nighttime is for sleeping versus playing.

🌟 New Mama Alert 👶🏻 As your Mama Coach, here are my top 5 tips to help you navigate the exciting journey of motherhood with ease:

1️⃣ Rest, Mama, Rest: Don’t underestimate the power of rest and recovery, especially during those early days. Listen to your body and prioritize self-care to recharge and replenish your energy reserves.

2️⃣ Feed & Bond: Whether you’re breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, use feeding time as an opportunity to bond with your baby. Focus on creating a calm and nurturing environment to foster a strong connection right from the start.

3️⃣ Seek Support: You don’t have to do it all alone, Mama! Reach out to your support network for assistance, whether it’s your partner, family members, or a trusted friend. Accepting help isn’t a sign of weakness – it’s a sign of strength.

4️⃣ Trust Your Instincts: You’re the expert when it comes to your baby. Trust your instincts and intuition – they’re powerful tools that will guide you through the ups and downs of motherhood.

5️⃣ Practice Self-Compassion: Cut yourself some slack, Mama. You’re doing an amazing job, even on the toughest days. Be kind to yourself, celebrate your victories, and remember that it’s okay to ask for help when you need it.

You’ve got this!

✨✨Want to build an ample milk supply postpartum ✨✨👇🏻

Breastfeeding can feel overwhelming or stressful when you are trying to learn all the things about your new little baby. There can be so many challenges when you are starting out your feeding journey. Some babies just aren’t ready to breastfeed right away or they have trouble latching or sucking.

Here are some of my top tips to help make this easier:

🦋 Try to initiate the first feed within the first hour of birth. Keep baby skin to skin and resist the urge to weigh and measure or pass babe around

✨When babe starts to cue to feed (roots, tongue thrusts) latch babe and let them feed as long as they want.✨

🦋 If babe doesn’t cue to feed, if you have been separated or if they are premature and not ready for feeding.

✨Hand express for 10 minutes, pump for 20 minutes and hand express for 5 minutes.✨

🦋 Feed baby on demand, at a minimum of 8-12 times in 24 hours. If breastfeeding is a struggle we recommend hand expression, pumping and hand expressing again. Give baby the milk via syringe, cup or bottle. This doesn’t mean your baby won’t learn to breastfeed. Your baby will learn the more you practice, ensuring an ample milk supply will help during this process

🦋 Pacifiers are a great tool for newborns, but introducing them too early can interfere with your supply building efforts. Your baby is wired to nurse frequently, increased demand means increased supply. Giving a pacifier could potentially miss feeding cues, which can lead to a decrease in supply.

If you are struggling to get your little one to breastfeed, or you are unsure about breastfeeding, book your free consult today to learn more about what I offer at The Mama Coach.

I am a Registered Nurse with years of experience in labor and delivery and postpartum. I am also a mom to four little ones. I am passionate about working with moms and their babies. Our programs are based on Science + Empathy + Support. I work with you and your child to find the best solutions, I don't make you do anything your not comfortable with. I understand that every child is unique and so is every parenting style. Our prenatal programs is great, it is tailored to your specific pregnancy and you can take it in the comfort of your own home at a time that works best for you. I offer a Newborn program that gives you and your baby the best start on your new journey together so by the end of the 8 weeks you are both thriving! Need help with breastfeeding, I can help you! I have helped so many new moms in the early postpartum period start their nursing journey, I have also helped many Mamas in their nursing journey postpartum at many different stages! Bottle feeding - I have lots of support for you with that!

I am very passionate about helping your family find sleep, as I to have been sleep deprived with my own babies at all different stages with all different struggles, I mean they are all unique individuals with their own needs! There are so many factors that need to be accounted for, which is why as a Registered Nurse I do a full assessment on your child included in each sleep package. I look extensively at feeding, development, weight gain, and your child’s circadian rhythm to determine the best way to find sleep. If there is an underlying feeding issue, finding sleep will be a challenge. Lots of tears and feeding may be compromised. I look at the entire picture and if there is something that needs to be addressed prior to working on sleep, I will help you or find you the health professional to address it, then work on sleep together. There are a lot of choices out there for finding sleep for your little one, but I promise we bring so much more than sleep. We bring quality care and support from a Registered Nurse that will help you meet your goals.

Let me help guide your through your allergy needs. I understand the fear and anxiety around food allergies, and our services help educate and empower parents to gain control of their child’s allergies. I am certified by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada to provide the most up to date and evidence-based information for how to perform CPR and what to do if your child is choking. I can provide you and your family and friends with the opportunity to learn together to care for your children with my services in your own home! I also provide Choking and CPR workshops for parents in the community of Lloydminster and surrounding areas to come and learn hands on and feel confident leaving with the knowledge of what to do and how to react to save your little ones life.

No matter where you are at on your motherhood journey, I am here for you! No judgement, only support to give your family the best start to making life long memories together!
