Burnout Mindsets Part 2!

"Being exhausted is part of being a mom"
"Burnout is a normal part of parenting"

The thing is, if you believe motherhood will be exhausting, you will prove yourself right! You will look for the things that confirms it, you won't think twice about over spending your energy or taking more onto your plate. Because you're bound to be exhausted anyways so why not also be super productive πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

When this mindset is combined with the belief from Part 1 (Everyone's needs come first) it's easy to see how these create a system that don't support mom.

I am in no way claiming that parenthood is easy with some mindset shifts, sleep deprivation + everything else is going to make us tired! But burnout is the point of physical and emotional exhaustion, when you are running on empty.

Understanding and shifting your mindset allows you to change the system that got you to the point of burnout. So you can take the steps and set the boundaries that allow you to recover and find joy again!

Birth Control Pill Side Effects/ Risks

Jus to name a few: breast tenderness, nausea, headaches, migraines, weight gain, mood changes, decreased libido, bloating, blood clots, increased blood pressure, dry eyes...

This isn't to hate on the pill, it's an incredible tool for many situations and women. The thing is women are coming into my office saying they just don't feel like themselves anymore since starting it. That they were never informed of the potential side effects or the risks taking it. That it will "balance their hormones" or "regulate their periods".

Burnout Mindsets Part 1!

"Everyone's needs come before my own"
"I'll take care of myself when everyone else is taken care of"
"I never have time for myself"

AKA I am not a priority

This one is often modelled to us growing up so we didn't even realize we internalized it as our own narrative around motherhood.

If this is a belief you carry, consciously or not, it will make change difficult when you want to take care of yourself. It will bring up tons of mom guilt when restructuring that priority list. Just because it gets uncomfortable does not mean it is wrong!

The truth is our capacity to take care of others (kids, spouses, parents, friends, pets) will only go as deep as we take care of ourselves. When we make ourselves a priority it allows us to recover, it allows us to thrive. This translates into more patience, more joy, more connection, more gratitude.

Day Diary! πŸ“–

You've probably heard of a diet diary at this point, where you track everything you eat and drink to guide recommendations from your naturopathic doctor.

Let me introduce the Day Diary!

Essentially the same set up but instead of tracking food I want to see everything you're doing in your day and for how long. I want to know how many hours you're working, doing housework, childcare, self-care, movement etc.

This is a fantastic tool for us to look at where things can shift to better support your health goals and burnout recovery. Because it probably feels like there is absolutely no time to rest or slow down, but if that is what you need to feel better we've got to make it happen!

In my patient visits we use this to reflect on where you are spending your time, what things could be delegated to others (even if we have to pay them to do it), what are your anxiety triggers, and what mindsets are making change difficult.

Your time is precious, let's make sure you're making the most of it.

The women who are doing everything for everybody and not prioritizing themselves. Who feel guilt and shame whenever they carve out some time for themselves on the never ending to-do list.

The women who want to redefine what is means to be a good mother and wife. Who want to model for their children healing, growth, and balance.

Fever Optimization πŸ€’

First things first, NO, you do not need to fear the fever!
A lot of fever phobia comes from the belief that it is dangerous for kiddos to run a high temperature. It actually takes a temperature of 108+ to cause damage and the body has ways to regulate so it's rare for fevers to go above 106.

Now, why do we want to optimize fever? It is the body's natural response to illness and has many short and long term benefits like...

🌑 Stimulating immune function and white blood cells to fight infection
🌑 Helps kill microbes and prevent replication
🌑 May reduce length and severity of the infection compared to suppressing it
🌑 Lowers risk of developing allergies later on

What is much more important than the number showing up on your thermometer is how your child looks and acts. If they are behaving normally aside from being more tired it's a sign that they are handling the sickness well. If they are lethargic, listless, unresponsive, have few wet diapers, or if you as their caregiver can tell that something feels off, that is a more significant sign that they need extra support.

Yes, it is difficult to see your little one uncomfortable but suppressing fevers is not be the answer to supporting their immune system development.

Working with a naturopathic doctor is a good fit if:
🩺 You are scared to optimize your kids fever and have more questions
🩺 You want to learn how to do it safely
🩺 Your child is about to enter preschool/daycare and you're worried about how often they'll be getting sick

Mindfulness is a hot topic word at the moment, for good reason, but you may not have heard about it being applied to your eating habits. If you experience digestive complaints or find your life does not allow space for rest these tips are a tool to consider. Ideally, mindful eating will become a habit, a regular practice in our daily lives. In a world where everything moves quickly and stress is constantly high dedicating time to promote rest and digest is essential to our wellbeing.

These practices notify your body that it is time to rest and digest. Your body calms and is more prepared to do all the intricate steps necessary to break down and absorb nutrients.

This food was grown from the earth and elements, handled by people to farm and deliver. It was cooked and prepared, either by yourself or someone else, and it is nourishing your body. There is also the gratitude for the people you may be sharing this meal with.

By eating mindfully we ensure that at a few moments in the day we are choosing rest over stress. These ideas can be implemented in whatever way feels authentic and manageable for you, one meal at a time or one idea at a time.

Did you know that digestive upset from dairy may not be lactose intolerance?

Cow's Milk Protein Allergy is when the body's immune system reacts to the proteins in dairy like casein.

Lactose Intolerance is when you lack the enzyme needed to break down the sugar in dairy, lactose.

Both of these can cause stomach pain, bloating, and changes to your kids poops! They can also both impact how your kiddos absorb other nutrients. Whether is CMPA or LI, no one likes to see their little on in pain or having difficulty with digestion. Especially with all we know now about how essential good digestion is to growth, development, mental wellness, immune function and so much more!

If you're worried that your kid is reacting to dairy and want to explore it deeper reach our to your naturopathic doctor or DM me!
