At CBI we believe in using an evidence-based approach to our practice. As we mentioned last week, our goal this month will be to highlight the importance of exercise in preventing falls this time year. This randomized control trial conducted in 2012 investigated if a balance specfic training program could improve an older adults balance, strength, and decrease their risk of falls.
Specifically, the results of this study demonstrate that exercise may have a moderate effect on an individuals isometric knee flexor strength (7Nm 95%CI 3 to 11) and only a small effect on their isometric knee extensor strength (7Nm 95%CI 1 to 12). Additionally, using the Biodex Balance System where 0 degrees is the best possible score, exercise may improve an older adults dynamic balance by an average of 2.1 degrees (95%CI 1.3 to 3.0). Lastly, the Falls Efficacy Scale was used to evaluate participants fear of falling. The lower an individuals score, the less fear they have of falling. These authors demonstrate exercise could possibly decrease an individuals score by an average of 8 points (95%CI 4 to 12). As a result, balance specific exercise programs may decrease falls in older adults by improving dynamic balance, knee flexor strength and decreasing an individuals fear of falling.
However, several limitations acknowledged by the authors of this study make these results imprecise. So we cannot be certain of how much of an effect exercise has in this population, but we do know exercise does not appear to increase an individuals risk of falling. Therefore, participating in a balance specific training program may improve your isometric knee flexor strength, dynamic balance, and decrease your risk of falling this winter.
