Millions of people around the world will suffer with osteoporosis and the majority are women. It is estimated that one in two women over the age of 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis. As a result of menopause, there is a reduction in estrogen which can cause rapid bone loss and lead to osteoporosis.

We can keep our bones healthy through strength training, a proper diet of calcium-rich foods and vitamin D intake, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol intake, stopping smoking, and under physicians guidance hormone replacement therapy may be indicated.

Physiotherapy at Meridian Spine & Joint can help. We will complete a detailed musculoskeletal assessment and determine the areas that you will need to target for strength training. Our clinicians are trained on exercise prescription and will be able to develop a safe strengthening program to target and load your bones and joints to help improve bone density by slowing or stopping bone loss.

Call Meridian today at (519) 471-7900 and schedule an appointment with one of our physiotherapists.

Meridian Spine & Joint Physiotherapy has been helping patients in southwestern Ontario for over 37 years. We employ a variety of treatment techniques including a hands-on technique referred to as manual therapy.

Manual therapy is defined as "a specialized area of physiotherapy/physical therapy for the management of neuro-musculoskeletal conditions, based on clinical reasoning, using highly specific treatment approaches including manual techniques and therapeutic exercises. Orthopaedic manual therapy also encompasses, and is driven by, the available scientific and clinical evidence and the biopsychosocial framework of each individual patient."

At Meridian Spine & Joint we complete a detailed physiotherapy assessment and we will consider all treatment techniques to assist in your recovery. Manual therapy may be used for pain relief, to improve mobility and function, and return to pre-injury activities.

Shin splints is a term for pain along the front of the shin bone, or tibia. Medically known as medial tibial stress syndrome, shin splints often occur in athletes or people who have recently intensified or changed their training routines. The increased activity overworks the muscles, tendons and bone tissue.

Shin splint causes and risk factors include those that have flat feet or problems with the arch of the foot, lower leg muscle imbalances, running on hard or inclined surfaces and inadequate footwear.

At Meridian Spine & Joint Physiotherapy, our clinicians will provide expert guidance on activity modification, footwear choices and a rehabilitation program that will assist with faster recovery and prevent re-injury.

Call us today at (519) 471-7900 to see one of our highly qualified physiotherapists. Don't let shin splints keep you down, come to Meridian for the care you need!

The foot is a complex body part with 26 bones and 33 joints. There are more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments in the foot. The Achilles tendon, the strongest tendon in the body, attaches from the back of the heel bone to make the strong large calf muscles. This all allows us to bear weight, walk and transmit force.

Sprain, strains, fractures, arthritis, gout, tendonitis, and plantar fasciitis are just some of the causes of foot pain. At Meridian Spine & Joint Physiotherapy, our clinicians have the knowledge and expertise to assess and provide you with the treatment you need to alleviate your symptoms and address the root cause.

We will assist with pain relief and rehabilitation to increase mobility, strength, flexibility, and restore normal foot function. Meridian's physiotherapists will assess your posture, gait, identify any abnormalities and offer tailored interventions to help correct them. We will determine if orthotics would be helpful and we are able to provide this service for you at our clinic. No need to go elsewhere.

Anyone experiencing pain due to chronic conditions or recent injuries would benefit with physiotherapy at Meridian. If you are experiencing discomfort while walking, limited range of motion, or difficulty engaging in activities you enjoy, it's time to consult with one of our physiotherapists.

Call us today at (519) 471-7900 and take that first step to pain-free feet!

Patellar tendonitis is an injury to the tendon connecting your kneecap (patella) to your shinbone. The patellar tendon works with the muscles at the front of your thigh to extend your knee so that you can kick, run and jump.

Patellar tendonitis, also known as jumper's knee, is most common in athletes whose sports involve frequent jumping — such as basketball and volleyball. However, even people who don't participate in jumping sports can get patellar tendinitis.

At Meridian Spine & Joint Physiotherapy, we have helped many patients recover from patellar tendonitis and return to the activities they love. Through a detailed musculoskeletal assessment, we will determine the best treatment for your recovery. Our treatment plan will be individualized for you to reach full recovery.

Aquatic exercise, also known as water-based exercise or swimming, offers numerous benefits for both physical and mental well-being.
Since aquatic exercises are low impact and full body, there are many benefits to water-based exercises. The exercises are beneficial for cardiovascular and musculoskeletal fitness.

At Meridian Spine & Joint Physiotherapy, our physiotherapists believe that aquatic exercises can help a variety of conditions, acute and chronic. We follow the latest research which has continued to show that water-based exercises may be even more beneficial than land exercises. Decreased pain and increased flexibility and strengthening may be achieved at a greater rate through aquatic exercise which will contribute to rehabilitation and injury recovery. Often while exercising further benefits include stress reduction and relaxation.

Call us today at (519) 471-7900 to see one of our clinicians. We will complete a detailed physiotherapy assessment and recommend specific exercises for your condition. If you enjoy the water, we can instruct you on aquatic exercises too. So Dive in and make a splash!
