Massage therapy is a regulated health profession in Ontario. Massage therapists must be registered with the college of massage therapy of Ontario in order to provide treatment.

What is Massage Therapy?
Massage therapy is the manipulation of soft tissues of the body including muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints. Massage therapy is a clinically-oriented healthcare option that helps alleviate the discomfort associated with every day occupational stresses, muscular over-use and many chronic pain conditions. (Reference: Registered Massage therapist of Ontario Association)

At Meridian Spine & Joint, we have fully qualified registered massage therapists that provide exceptional assessment and treatment of a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. Our massage therapists will identify the source of your muscular and soft tissue pain and through careful massage, help to relieve pain and restore mobility.

Pain is often challenging and difficult to manage. It may come on quickly (acute) or be present for several months/years (chronic).

Musculoskeletal pain can be influenced by the amount of tissue damage, past experiences, fear, anxiety, stress, lack of sleep, and habits. The pain may come from one area but felt or referred to another area of the body. The amount of pain a person experiences may not correlate with the amount of tissue damage. All of this can affect our perception and how we manage the pain. Ultimately it will affect us physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially.

Physiotherapy can help to assess the cause of musculoskeletal pain, best practice treatment and help to alleviate the pain and manage it properly. Proper physiotherapy treatment will help you get back to leading a healthy and vibrant life! Contact Meridian Spine & Joint Physiotherapy at (519)471-7900

Osteoarthritis of the knee is a very common condition that many people develop over time. Through wear and tear the joint will deteriorate with decreased joint space, breakdown of the cartilage covering the bone in the knee joint, and bony irregularities such as spurs and osteophytes may develop. All of these changes will cause pain, decreased mobility, and joint swelling.

As with all joints, it is better to keep moving as much as you are able to tolerate. Often fear will lead to decreased activity. In turn, you will have less strength and increased pain. Some patients will also have the feeling of instability which will lead to fear of movement, avoidance of activities, and poor function.

Meridian Spine & Joint physiotherapists will work with you to:
- assess your knee joint
- educate you to understand your condition and alleviate your fears
-provide you with the tools to decrease your pain and increase your strength
-help you return to your regular activities

With the warm, sunny days we tend to want to get outdoors to enjoy early spring. Walking and running are activities that many enjoy. However, nagging injuries can arise from overdoing it. Improper warmup, lack of general strength, repetitive strain, and poor footwear can contribute to walking and running related injuries. In addition, if you have had injuries in the past you may be more likely to develop problems again. At Meridian Spine & Joint we can help you resolve your old injuries and coach you through your progressive walking and running program. Call us today at (519) 471-7900 to book an appointment with one of our experienced clinicians.

We all know that if we do not use our muscles they get weaker and smaller or atrophy. As we age, we can lose strength of our muscles with inactivity. A study showed the quadriceps (front of thigh) muscle cross section on MRI effects from exercise. For the high level athlete (triathlete) the muscle was shown to be lean with very little fat tissue. If we are sedentary and do not exercise our muscles will be smaller with more fatty tissue. However even as we age, as long as we are physically active our muscles can remain strong as shown in the diagram.
It doesn’t matter if you are a fit young athlete, someone that has not exercised, or an older person looking to build your strength, we can help. At Meridian Spine & Joint, our physiotherapists will work with you to develop and maintain strong muscles. We will assess your needs and develop an individualized program that is right for you. Call us at (519)471-7900 to get started today!

A great deal of research has been done on the importance of activity
for our physical and mental health. Even increasing your activity by
small amounts makes a difference. By doing just 6 minutes of added
activity per day can help us to improve mobility, brain function and
decrease our risk of developing mobility issues. This can be done by
walking within your home. Pausing your Netflix show for just 6 minutes
and walking in your home will accomplish this goal.
Our physiotherapists at Meridian Spine & Joint understand the
importance of activity. They will work with you to increase your
mobility, balance, strength, and walking ability. Call us at 519-471-7900 to work on increasing your physical health today.
