Orthotics in Research: From High-Tech to Felt Pads?

Not all orthotics used in studies are created equal — and that really matters when interpreting the results.

In research, "orthotic" can mean:
• A fully custom-made device designed from 3D scans or casts
• A prefabricated insert pulled right off a shelf
• Or even a simple felt pad placed under the heel, arch or length of the foot

This represents a significant variation in the level of support, lifespan, and impact on foot and lower limb mechanics.

So when reading studies about orthotics, we always ask:
• What kind of orthotic was actually used?
• Was it custom made/customized for the participant?
• Was it intended to correct motion, redistribute pressure, or add comfort?

If you haven't heard, we have ventured into a new world of technology for orthotic manufacturing - 3D printing! With this new tech, we wanted to test the limits of what we can produce using 3D printing - thus, the first ever SoleScience 3D print competition was born!

We asked our Canadian Certified Pedorthists and manufacturing team to produce the most creative 3D printed device they could come up with, and the competition is tight!
