Please be aware there is an outbreak in south east London. It does not transmit person to person, but through bacteria from air conditioning systems, hot tubs, cooling towers and/hot water tanks.

The Middlesex-London Health Unit has declared an outbreak of Legionnaires’ Disease in the southeast area of the City of London.

What we know:
🦠43 cases have been reported in 2025 so far with most in the past week, including one fatality.
📍 Most cases are linked to a 6 km radius in the southeast end of the city.

What is Legionnaires’ Disease?
It’s a serious lung infection caused by breathing in Legionella bacteria, which can be found in:
- Cooling towers
- Hot tubs
- Air-conditioning systems
- Hot water tanks

What is being done?
The Health Unit is working in close partnership with Public Health Ontario and the Public Health Ontario Laboratories to investigate and identify the source of the outbreak. Environmental sampling of potential sources of Legionella is ongoing. Since Legionella can be found in many types of cooling systems, the investigation may take time. Sometimes in investigations like this one the source of the bacteria is never definitively found, though the outbreak may naturally end.
