✊🏾 Celebrating Black History Month

This Black History Month, we honour the legacy of Bernice Redmond, a trailblazer in Canadian health care.

Born in Toronto, Bernice dreamed of becoming a nurse, but was not permitted to attend Canadian nursing schools at the time. Determined to serve, she earned her diploma in the United States in 1945 and returned to Canada to work in public health, becoming the first Black nurse with the Nova Scotia Department of Health. She later became the first Black woman appointed to the Victorian Order of Nurses in Canada.

Her perseverance opened doors for future generations across the country and she provided fantastic care to thousands of Canadians.

Meaningful Living Home Care we are grateful for pioneers like Bernice Redmond whose courage and dedication continue to inspire compassionate, inclusive care today. 💛

When Caring Becomes Too Overwhelming ⚠️

Caregiver burnout is increasing, and it doesn’t happen all at once. It builds gradually through sleepless nights, emotional exhaustion, staffing shortages, and the ongoing pressure to keep giving, even when you’re already stretched thin. 🏥

Family caregivers provide over $600 billion in unpaid care annually in the U.S. (AARP & National Alliance for Caregiving). Behind that number are real people carrying invisible weight. 💔

In Ontario, Personal Support Workers know this weight well. They show up tired and still choose compassion. They comfort families, protect dignity, and advocate when it matters most.

🤍 We need to protect our PSWs. When we protect them, we strengthen our healthcare system, support families, and safeguard the most vulnerable in our communities.

February has always been a special month for me. 💙 It’s when I registered Meaningful Living Home Care and took a HUGE leap of faith.

Although my official healthcare journey began in 2004 as a PSW, caring for people was something my mother instilled in me from a young age. As a little girl, she would take me with her to visit people in our community who were sick, recovering, or struggling at home 🏡 There were no appointments or paperwork at this time, and she always believed that everyone deserved to be cared for, especially when they were vulnerable.

Her lessons of care and community support have never left me 💞 I carry a lot of love for her, along with some guilt for not being able to care for her personally during her final health struggle. Her passing ignited a calling in me to be there for others in similar situations, and I’ve dedicated my life to helping people feel supported, respected, and able to enjoy their lives!

To everyone who has trusted me and our team over the years, thank you so much. This community means everything to me 💙🏡 Please join us in celebrating our anniversary month! 🎉 We have a few new announcements coming soon!

This is such a cool way to look at care! 🌿

If you’re not familiar with this article or concept by Christine Boyd at St. Joseph's Health Care London, she uses the idea of planting a tree to explain what real, meaningful care looks like. 🌳

A tree doesn’t just get planted and left behind, it needs to be surrounded by soil (our peers), checked on regularly and consistently, given nourishment (having a home and food to eat), and cared for by people it can trust.

At Meaningful Living Home Care, this is how we approach care, walking alongside our clients, nurturing them with compassion, consistency, and trust so they can feel safe, supported, and truly at home. 🌱

If you or someone you love could use that kind of care, we’d love to connect.

In this moving reflection on what compassionate mental health care means to her personally, Christine Boyd, co-chair of St. Joseph’s Mental Health Care Patient’s Council, reminds us that healing is not just about medicine; but how the right care can make individuals feel safe, supported and cared for.

Patti, one of our wonderful clients, is a beautiful reminder of what home care is really about. 💞

When care is consistent, clients don’t just receive support, they build real relationships. With a smaller circle of familiar caregivers, trust grows, friendships form, and people truly feel seen. That’s something you don’t get with large, rotating home care agencies.

We show up 🌟, we know you 👀, and we care 💖

That’s what makes Meaningful Living different, and why our care feels so personal. 🏡

If you or a loved one could use extra support at home, we’d love to connect.

This is so important 💙 With so many Canadians living with dementia, educational opportunities like this help ensure care stays compassionate and inclusive. Thank you for supporting families, caregivers, and communities!

Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging

By 2030, nearly 1 million people in Canada will be living with dementia.

This makes it more important than ever to provide education that supports inclusive, person-centred care. Discover how the RIA’s LIVING the Dementia Journey (LDJ) is helping to meet this need: https://the-ria.ca/news/living-the-dementia-journey-a-transformational-approach-to-person-centred-ca...
