2 Clinics available: London, ON and Chatham, ON As Canadian Certified Pedorthists, C. Ped (C)'s, we specialize in custom made foot orthotics to relieve foot, ankle, knee and hip pain, as well as correcting gait abnormalities. After taking a medical history, assessing the lower limbs both weight bearing and non-weight bearing, we are able to video a person's gait to determine if custom made foot orthotics would be beneficial. We use our unique SOLE Technique to set us apart from other orthotic clinics. We provide stabilization using orthopaedic fundamentals of gait with our carefully layered and engineered technique to build your foot orthotics. We also have the training and capability to do footwear modifications (ie lifts, flares), and custom footwear. We can measure and fit for both Performance-Grade (15-20 mmHg) and Medical-Grade (20-30 and 30-40 mmHg) compression socks to help with your sore, swollen and tired legs. All work is done at our on-site lab. A physician's prescription is required for all custom made foot orthotics.

When wearing custom foot orthotics, the goal is for you to be able to wear them comfortably. Orthotics shouldn't end with a "horror story" about how painful or uncomfortable they are.

Sometimes the orthotics are not perfect (as much as we try) when you first get them. It can be trial and error to determine what works best for you and your feet. Adjustments may be big or small (less than a millimetre), but it can make a world of a difference ๐ŸŒŽ

If you find your orthotics to be uncomfortable, painful, or even if you feel like they are "empty" or do not have enough support, please book an appointment to have your orthotics adjusted! We want you to be able to wear them comfortably and hopefully get you back to pain-free walking ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ฃ

Your feet are very important to you in general, but especially when you are diabetic. โฃ
โฃ
There could be many changes with your feet including:โฃ
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Pins and needles/numbness in the toes (neuropathy)โฃ
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Lack of any feeling in the feetโฃ
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Clawed toesโฃ
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Prominent base of 5th metatarsal (bone that sticks out on the side of the foot)โฃ
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Loss of balance โฃ
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Thin skin that cuts easilyโ€”can develop ulcersโฃ
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Decreased healing timeโฃ
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Less hair growth on feet (less oxygen)โฃ
โฃ
Not that Diabetes will do all of this to your feet! It can be dependent of sugar levels and activity levels. However, as a diabetic, you definitely do need to think about your feet! Here are some tips to help maintain good foot health:โฃ
๐Ÿ‘Ÿ Wear shoes as often as possible. Protect your feet from walking on objects or stubbing your toes. Shoes will also provide more balance and stability. โฃ
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Buy shoes that are deep and round at the toe box and have minimal seams to rub on the foot. Easiest way to see if the shoe fits your foot is to take out insole and place foot on it. If foot overhangs the the shoe does not fit shape of foot. โฃ
โฃ๐Ÿค• Always check insides of shoes with hands before placing feet. If you are losing feeling you may not notice the LEGO piece your child placed in there for safe keeping.
๐Ÿšซ Check your feet nightly for redness (rubbing) or blisters. If you canโ€™t see bottom of feet, buy a mirror and put on an angle or an extended pole. โฃ
๐Ÿง‘โ€โš•๏ธ See your physician and Pedorthist regularly. Itโ€™s much easier to help you if we can catch rubbing/infections/discomfort earlier rather than later. โฃ

Ulcers, not a fun topic however it is an extremely important one. As mentioned, ulcers are wounds or open sores that will not heal or keep returning.

Although many people associate ulcers with diabetes, there are many reasons why they might occur. Including, poor circulation, issues with veins, hypertension, lymphedema, inflammatory diseases, history of smoking, pressure from lying in one position (bed sore), etc. Ulcers are typically defined by the appearance of the ulcer, the ulcer location, and the way the borders and surrounding skin of the ulcer look.

The best way to treat an ulcer is PREVENTION! If you are prone to ulcers or have a sore that doesn't look quite right, it is best to book an appointment with a trained professional to have the wound assessed. If the wound is hot, red, and angry looking it is best to seek immediate attention from a doctor.

More often now than ever, we are seeing many clients with Type 2 Diabetes. And while we will get into foot health in a later post, there are many ways to help control your Diabetes. Change in food you eat, exercise and healthier habits are just a few examples. โฃ
Exercise can be one of the many things you can do to reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes. But you need to make sure your feet are cooperating in order to stick with it!!โฃ
โฃ
Exercising doesn't have to involve going to the gym or running a marathon. It can be as simple as taking a 15 minute walk around the block every day (or every other day-with our busy schedules), or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. โฃ
โฃ
Whatever activity you choose to do, make sure you're taking care of your feet and proper shoes. โฃ
At S.O.S we can help you make sure you're wearing the right shoes for your activity to help you and your feet stay healthy! โฃ

Today is Remembrance Day ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

Please take a moment today to honour, reflect, and remember those who have fought for our country and those who made the ultimate sacrifice to allow us as Canadians to have freedom.

Diabetes can affect your feet much more than I bet you thought!!

As the disease progresses, feet may become hypersensitive or even lack any sensations at all. If you or someone you know has diabetes, here are a few tips for caring for your feet:
1๏ธโƒฃ Wash your feet daily with lukewarm water and soap. If you lack sensation, hot water could burn or scald the feet. Soap will get them clean.
2๏ธโƒฃ Dry your feet well, especially between the toes. If moisture remains between the toes or in cracks or crevasses of the foot, youโ€™re st risk for infection or athletes foot.
3๏ธโƒฃ Apply moisturizing lotion but not between the toes. Same as above, you donโ€™t want a buildup of moisture between the toes. Keeping the legs and feet soft and moisturized will help with the dryness and reduce cracking.
4๏ธโƒฃ Check your feet daily for blisters, redness, cuts, new callouses. If prรฉsent contact your doctor and visit your Pedorthist to off-load these areas of pressure.
5๏ธโƒฃ Trim nails straight across. This will help prevent ingrown toenails.
6๏ธโƒฃ Change your socks daily. Reduce infection by wearing clean, fresh socks.
7๏ธโƒฃ Avoid walking barefoot both inside and outside. As the diabetes progresses, lack of sensation becomes a problem. Protect your feet with shoes or sandals.
8๏ธโƒฃ Examine your shoes before putting in your feet. Check for seams, stones, legos, anything that could cut your feet.
Worried about your feet? Call us for an appointment and we can help calm those worries.

Did you know that November is National Diabetes Awareness Month?

Diabetes is a disease that has reached epidemic proportions in Canada...1 in 3 Canadians are living with diabetes or are pre-diabetic.

Diabetes not only impacts the individual's life but their loved ones as well. Foot care is one of the many things overlooked with this disease and it's important to educate yourself on the health risk factors and what you can do.

Throughout the month we'll be sharing tips and tidbits of info about this disease, as
a Pedorthist it's unfortunately one of the most common diseases we see affecting the feet and lower limbs.

In honour of Diabetes month, I wanted to talk about a condition that many people experience that come to see us.... DIABETIC NEUROPATHY

Diabetic neuropathy is a more serious complication of diabetes when elevated blood sugar levels damage nerves leading to loss of feeling in the extremities, most often in the feet and lower legs.

Custom-made orthoses are often prescribed to distribute pressure evenly on the bottom of the foot. Orthotics made for people with diabetic neuropathy are often made from materials that are soft and cushioned, support the entire foot, reduce friction and accommodate any deformities of the foot.

The loss of feeling in the feet often results in the inability to detect small sores or cuts on the feet, which can easily progress to an ulcer. This can happen from a small stone or other item that has gotten into the shoe that someone without neuropathy would notice.
In order to prevent these more serious complications:
๐Ÿ‘ Check your feet with a mirror for any signs of redness or sores
๐Ÿ‘ Check inside your footwear each day, removing any foreign objects and looking for signs of wear
๐Ÿ‘ Ensuring shoes fit the foot properly (proper shape, length, and width) to avoid excess pressure on the foot, which can lead to skin breakdown
๐Ÿ‘ Regular appointments with your Pedorthist to ensure your orthotics and footwear are still supporting the feet properly
๐Ÿ‘ Regular foot care appointments to ensure the skin and nails remain trimmed and healthy
