One of many ways to decrease the chance of tearing during delivery is...
HYDRATION! 💦
Water is an incredibly powerful force signalling health, life, flow, and vitality.
DURING PREGNANCY here’s what you can be doing to hydrate your body from the inside:
☕️ Every day most pregnant women need to intake 10-12 cups of fluid for themselves and baby. Drink lots of fluid: water, flavoured water, teas, soups, smoothies, coconut water, juices, blended watermelon, and bone broths.
♨️ If your environment is dry, run a humidifier in your home, at your workstation, and by your bedside overnight.
👌 Do prenatal perineal massage. Manipulating your perineum is hydrating because it increases in blood flow to the area and warms up the tissue. Use a warm 100% natural oil like jojoba, olive, or coconut oil over your perineum. (Big bonus - perineal massage is actually brain training.)
DURING LABOUR keep your body hydrated:
🚿 Get in the shower/tub during labour and warm up your body and perineum - your skin absorbs water and is more flexible when warm and hydrated. Consider birthing in water.
🥤 Every hour of labour, try to drink a total of 1-2 cups of something nourishing (herbal tea with some honey, light broth, etc). Take a sip after every wave/contraction. (Big bonus - staying hydrated helps decrease pain of contractions and cues you to go p*e every hour meaning you get up, move, and sit on the toilet which automatically cues you to relax your pelvic floor.)
⚪️ Ask in advance for your midwives or nurses to use a warm compress over your perineum as your baby’s head is about to be born. So much great research evidence with this tip.
