All Canadians are encouraged to wear a poppy during the Remembrance Period from the last Friday in October to the end of the day November 11 as a way to honour and thank our Veterans for their service and sacrifice.

Here's a short reminder of how to properly wear a poppy.

For Diabetes Awareness Month we are highlighting three members of the St. Joseph's Diabetes Care Team.

Barbara Weryk, Marsha Driscoll and Mary Biro are registered nurses and diabetes educators. They all live with type 1 diabetes –and each one wears an insulin pump.

Insulin pumps are a preferred method for managing type 1 diabetes, a recent clinical trial co-led at St. Joseph’s has revealed their significant benefits for people living with type 2 diabetes who require multiple daily insulin injections.

The Diabetes Care Team at St. Joseph’s has been instrumental in supporting and educating patients, as they begin recommending Insulin Pump Therapy to people with Type 2 diabetes.

Health Canada’s approval of the Alzheimer-fighting drug lecanemab is game-changing for people with early stages of the disease, says the head of a St. Joseph’s program that played a key role in the medication’s clinical trials.

“We’ve been working for over 20 years to find a compound that is disease-modifying. This is the first approved drug in Canada that addresses the underlying pathology of Alzheimer’s, not just the symptoms,” says Dr. Michael Borrie, medical director of St. Joseph’s Aging Brain and Memory Clinic.

The medication offers hope and buys time for people who meet specific eligibility criteria, including cognitive testing and advanced brain imaging and biomarker tests through a specialized site like St. Joseph’s.

Last Thursday, we welcomed individuals to St. Joseph’s Hospital for the annual Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day.

The event featured presentations from surgeons, information booths and a show and tell lounge for patients to see real results and ask questions of women who have gone through breast reconstruction.

Thank you to all who participated, and who made this event possible – the positivity, support and openness of the people in attendance is always a hallmark of this great event.

For half a century, family physician Dr. David Munro has been caring for generations of families with compassion and dedication.

From delivering babies in the 1970s, to supporting Mount Hope residents today, Dr. Munro has seen medicine evolve in extraordinary ways, yet his philosophy has remained the same: “Treat people as people- see them as individuals first, not their medical diagnosis.”

Join us in congratulating Dr. Munro on an incredible 50 years of service with St. Joseph’s.

Last week, we celebrated Health Information Professionals Week.

Throughout the week, our Health Information Management team hosted information booths, trivia and provided treats to help our community learn more about the work they do.

From coding and abstracting, to managing patient records, ensuring privacy compliance, and supporting quality assurance, our health information professionals play a key role in delivering safe, high-quality care.

A big thank you to everyone who participated.

“Most people have one life; we have two. There’s life before diagnosis—where we go to work, hang out, buy boots and complain about traffic on the beltway. Then, there’s life after diagnosis. The one that’s a gift, the one where you realize that the meaning of life is simply living.” — Murphy Brown, Episode 10

That Murphy Brown quote stuck with Kellie Chouinard for years, but she never understood why—until she was diagnosed with cancer at 34.

In this week’s episode of Patient Talks, Kellie sits down with host Mandi Fields to share her journey with breast cancer. From survivorship to the challenges of keeping family close, Kellie closes out this season’s Patient Talks episodes with an honest and vulnerable conversation.

Trick or treating at Parkwood Institute🎃

The travelling cart provides an opportunity for residents, patients and staff who are unable to visit our on-site store, to purchase items such as sweet treats, chips, slippers, basic clothing items, toiletries and seasonal giftware within their home unit or department.

The travelling cart began over 80 years ago and most recently returned to Parkwood Institute Main Building. Revenue generated from the cart and on-site store sales are returned to patient care and patient and resident programs.
