St. Joseph’s is excited to be launching PatientTalks, a spinoff of the DocTalks Podcast that focuses on the patient experience of the health care topics important to our listeners.

Starting next week, PatientTalks will kick off with a four-part series on breast cancer, touching on topics like being diagnosed young, complications of breast cancer and survivorship.
We encourage listeners to subscribe to the DocTalks Podcast wherever you listen to get notified when our first PatientTalks episode launches next Tuesday, Sept.16!

We hope these episodes help those on a breast cancer journey feel less alone in their experiences

Last week, staff and patients at Parkwood Institute gathered at the Nourish Garden for a series of health and wellness opportunities.

Throughout the event, guests played lawn games, enjoyed fresh veggies from the garden, participated in garden tours and, a crowd favourite, indulged in a chocolate beet cake.

Volunteer Services at St. Joseph’s is launching a new ‘Local Vendor Program’ designed to support community entrepreneurs. Local artisans are invited to sell their locally made goods within on-site stores located at St. Joseph’s Health Care London beginning this Fall.

A huge thank you to all the incredible volunteers who led and supported this year’s backpack drive. Together, we collected 949 backpacks along with thousands of essential school supplies.

Thanks to your generosity, we were able to donate:

👉420 backpacks to Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB)
👉379 backpacks to London District Catholic School Board (LDCSB)
👉75 backpacks to Conseil Scolaire Viamonde
👉75 backpacks to Conseil Scolaire Catholique Providence

Back to school season is upon us and knowing the supports available to students in the city is important.

The partnership between Western University and the Regional Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Treatment Program allows our specialized team to go on campus to support students who have experienced a sexual assault and/or domestic violence.

Students can receive emotional support and crisis intervention, medical care including STI and pregnancy testing and prevention, and evidence collection, which are free of charge to all students.

Transportation can also be arranged for students to receive care at St. Joseph’s Hospital if they choose.

If you need care or support, please call 519 646-6100 ext. 64224 and ask to “speak with a nurse”.

An update for our community.

The animal research conducted at Lawson Research Institute, St. Joseph’s Health Care London (St. Joseph’s) adheres to the highest standards of, and is in compliance with, all scientific and ethics protocols. The Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) and the Western Animal Care Committee provide valued third-party oversight and ensure our commitment to ethical research at every stage of the discovery and innovation process.

The Government of Ontario is an important partner in every aspect of our work. Following consultations with the province, St. Joseph’s will immediately cease research studies involving dogs.

We acknowledge that this will have a significant impact on the ground-breaking research that has resulted in major strides in cardiac care and treatment, and on the dedicated teams involved in this work.

“This is not just about building homes but about rebuilding lives”, shares Brad Field, Homes For Heroes Foundation (H4HF) CEO.

In collaboration with the City of London and the Homes For Heroes Foundation, St. Joseph’s has provided land at Parkwood Institute for the construction of a tiny homes village for veterans experiencing homelessness. Design plans were unveiled at Parkwood Institute this morning.

“The veterans will know they are surrounded by a community who cares about them and cares about their wellbeing,” said Roy Butler, President of St. Joseph’s Health Care London.

The village will be located on Western Counties Road, a historic site of convalescent care for veterans in London following World War II.

The London Veterans Village will feature:
- 25 fully equipped tiny homes
- a community garden
- recreation space
- on-site social services
- peer-to-peer support opportunities

Working with H4HF builds on our ongoing commitment to veterans. We also support the community with our Veterans Care Program and Operational Stress Injury Clinic.
