💡Alumni Spotlight💡

Meet Rachel Liu (formerly: nee Harding) who is currently a registered nurse.

How did your time on SERT contribute to your professional development?
I hated my first few years of nursing education and thought I’d made a mistake choosing it. I decided to try out for SERT in my 3rd year after witnessing a medical emergency off campus, and it ignited a passion for emergency medicine. I realized medicine was exciting, and once I knew what to do, it didn’t have to be scary. SERT and the skills I gained through training directly impacted my placements, my clinical experiences were more impactful, and ultimately they led to me working in critical care. I’ve been an ICU nurse for 12 years now and I give my time on SERT all the credit.

On April 4th, we gathered for our End-of-Year Awards Dinner to celebrate the incredible dedication, heart, and impact of SERT this year.

We were deeply honoured to be joined by Rob Garland, one of SERT’s original members whose vision and determination brought this team to life. His continued support is a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come.

We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Ted Stayshyn, who presented an award on behalf of his late sister—a beloved member of the SERT family. His words were a moving reminder of the lasting legacy and strong sense of community that define this team.

To the Western community – thank you for another year of unwavering trust, support, and kindness. We wish you all the best as we wrap up the spring semester! SERT will remain on call until Wednesday, April 30th, at 22:00.

🚨 RESPONDER PROFILE 🚨

Name: Chris
Program: 4th Year Criminology & Sociology
Year on SERT: 1

Why did you join SERT?
I joined to be able to help others and give back to campus. I always though SERT seemed like a pretty cool thing, but I thought I needed a background in med sci or other sciences. Once I found out anyone could apply I did! And the rest is history…

What is your favourite thing about SERT?
Definitely the social part! I have met a lot of great people through SERT and whether it is on a call, hanging out, or at a social event everyone is very tight-knit and it feels like you have known everyone on the team for years.

What’s your go-to Spoke order?
Jalapeno cheddar bagel with roasted red pepper cream cheese

What advice would you give people who want to join SERT?
My advice would be to just apply! I had no prior background experience when I applied, but you learn a lot during the training portion, so don’t let that hold you back. SERT is for anyone and if you are interested in making a difference and helping others (in a cool uniform) you should definitely apply.
