Every day can be an opportunity for self-care!

Self-care is a vital part of maintaining independence, improving health, and supporting overall well-being. With the right support at home, self-care becomes more accessible, whether that means nutritious meals, gentle movement, personal hygiene, rest, or social connection.

Self-care includes:
• 🧠 Health literacy: understanding your body and needs
• 🤲 Self-awareness: recognizing what matters most
• 🚶 Physical activity: staying active in safe ways
• 🥗 Healthy eating: making good food choices
• 🛡️ Risk avoidance: preventing injury or illness
• 🧼 Good hygiene: supporting comfort and dignity
• 🛠️ Using services well: knowing when to ask for help

Let’s take time to reflect on how we can support our own self-care and encourage it in those we serve.

Fitness and activity are important for seniors to maintain their health, mobility, and overall well-being. Here are some tips to help seniors stay active safely and effectively:

✅ Strength train to maintain muscle mass and bone density: Light weights, resistance bands, or bodyweight exercises like squats and push-ups help.

✅ Flexibility exercises improve coordination and the risk of falls: Stretching, yoga, or Tai Chi can enhance these areas.

✅ Balance exercises to improve stability: this includes activities like standing on one leg, heel-to-toe walking, or using balance boards.

✅ Include warm-up and cool-down: start with a gentle warm-up to prepare the body for exercise and finish with a cool-down to gradually reduce heart rate and prevent stiffness.

✅ Incorporate functional movements: focus on exercises that mimic daily activities, such as sitting and standing from a chair or lifting lightweight objects, to maintain independence and daily functionality.
