WHY YOUR KNEE HURTS WHEN GOING DOWN STAIRS ⚡️

Knee pain during stair descent is one of the most common movement complaints, and it is often assumed to be a direct knee joint problem such as cartilage wear or injury.

However, research from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), NIH biomechanics studies, and JOSPT shows that in many cases, the knee is not the root cause.

During stair descent, your body relies heavily on hip stability to control the movement of the leg.

The gluteus medius and other hip stabilizers are responsible for keeping the femur aligned as you step down.

When these muscles are weak or not properly activated, the hip collapses inward during movement.

This causes the knee to shift inward as well, increasing stress on the patellofemoral joint.

As a result, pain appears at the knee even though the real dysfunction started higher up at the hip.

What makes this misleading is that the knee feels like the problem area.

But in reality, it is being overloaded due to poor hip control.

That’s why treating only the knee may not fully solve the issue.

Because the movement pattern itself is dysfunctional.

Fix hip control → not just knee pain.

The Hidden Muscle in Your Hip That Might Be Causing Pain Down Your Leg

Have you ever experienced pain that starts in your lower back or hip and travels down your leg

It can feel similar to sciatica

And many people assume the problem is coming from the spine

But in some cases

The source of the pain is much deeper in the hip

The Anatomy: A Small Muscle With a Big Impact

Deep inside your gluteal region there is a small muscle called the piriformis

It sits very close to the sciatic nerve

Which is one of the largest nerves in your body

Because of their close relationship

Even a small change in the muscle can affect the nerve

The Biomechanics of Compression

When the piriformis becomes tight or overactive

It can compress the sciatic nerve

This compression can interfere with how the nerve functions

Leading to pain or discomfort

That can travel down the leg

The Consequence: Pain That Travels

The pain may start in the hip

But it can spread down the back of the thigh

Sometimes reaching the calf or even the foot

This creates a confusing pattern

Because the pain appears far from its source

Why Most People Never Fix It

Most people focus only on the lower back

Or where they feel the pain

They stretch or treat the wrong area

But if the piriformis remains tight

The nerve remains compressed

And the pain continues

How to Break the Cycle

The key is to address the muscle that is creating the pressure

Allowing the sciatic nerve to move freely again

Your body works as a connected system

And sometimes

The real problem is hidden deep inside

If your pain travels down your leg

It may not be coming from your spine

It may be your hip holding the nerve in place
