Functional Tests to Access Gut Microbiome

1. Stool Tests: GI360 or microbiology stool from and GIMAP from are a few stool test options I offer patients to assess gut microbiome. These tests look for bacteria, yeast and parasites. They check to see if you have enough beneficial bacteria and if you have any opportunistic or dysbiotic bacteria. Some also assess fat digestion, gut immune function, gut inflammation.

2. Breath Tests- There are two breath test options for the digestive system. H. Pylori Breath Test and SIBO breath test from . These are breath tests to check for H. Pylori infection or Small Intestinal Bacteria Overgrowth (SIBO).

3. Urine Test- Microbial Organic Acid Test from Assess urinary metabolites for fungal and bacterial overgrowths.

Reach out if you have any questions about testing for gut microbiome imbalances.

Tips 3-4 for optimal bowel movements

3. Move your body. Try to move your body for 30 minutes/day. Walking, stretching, dancing, swimming, or the gym are all great strategies. Choose something you like to do, or you likely won’t stick with it.

4. Elevate your feet while on the toilet by using a foot stool or squatty potty. This position aligns the re**um into a vertical orientation which makes it easier for you to pass a stool. Ideally stool should leave your body with little effort. If you need to strain to pass a stool you are constipated.

Stool Transit Time

Transit time is the amount of time it takes food to travel through the digestive system from your mouth to your a**s. The ideal transit time is 24-48 hours. You can test your transit time by eating corn or beets and recording how long it takes. A short transit time could be caused by maldigestion, gut microbiome imbalances and stress. A long transit time could be caused by lack of fiber, water, physical activity and gut microbiome imbalances

Stool Consistency

To assess stools consistency, take a look at the Bristol Stool Chart. The Bristol stool chart is a medical tool that classifies stools into seven types. Have a look here to see what type of stools you have.

Type 1 and 2 would indicate constipation
Type 3 and 4 are ideal
Type 5-7 are diarrhea

It is also advisable to note if you see mucous in the stool. Mucous is an indication of inflammation in the digestive tract.

What is your poo telling you?

Do you look in the toilet bowl after you have a bowel movement? If not, I would highly encourage it. Looking at your stool can provide information about your digestive health. Things to pay attention to about your stool are consistency, colour and transit time. For the month of March I'll be focusing on digestive health- stay tuned for more info.

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter (signaling molecule in the brain) that supports a healthy mood.

Stop and feel the sun on your face, wear your favourite jewelry, buy yourself the flowers, feed the birds - whatever it is that brings you joy!
