When Sharon met Bill 54 years ago, it was over a suitcase — and a feeling that they were meant for each other.

From bowling dates to a wedding day that included a fender-bender, Sharon and Bill share a lifetime of memories and a deep commitment to one another. The pair recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Mount Hope with a vow renewal ceremony.

The atrium was turned into a romantic venue thanks to our incredible staff and the Wishing Well Program, funded by the St. Joseph's Health Care Foundation. There were flowers, live harp music and plenty of Elvis, Sharon’s favourite.

Sharon was diagnosed with epilepsy at a young age. She experienced seizures growing up that left her right side paralyzed. She was told she likely wouldn't live past 20 or ever walk again. Now in her 80s, Sharon defied the odds – found great, everlasting love and is exactly where she wants to be, alongside Bill.

The couple shared their secrets to nurturing a 50 year marriage.
❤️ Sharon: “Have confidence in your partner.”
❤️ Bill: “A little TLC goes a long way.”

Exceptional patient care often begins with excellent clinical trials – it’s the questions we ask and the solutions we discover. Participants meet professionals like Heather LaPier, a clinical research assistant inspired by teamwork and inspired by patient needs.

“I never want to lose sight of the fact patients are living longer and better lives because of the work we’re doing. I have a front-row seat when patients come in for visits and tell us a diabetes treatment or a dialysis intervention is making them feel better,” she says.

Dr. Graham King isn’t one to brag — so we’ll do it for him!

A successful orthopaedic surgeon and researcher at St. Joseph’s, Dr. King is known for his dedication, innovation, and impact — just ask his patients!

This year, the Canadian Orthopaedic Association (COA) honoured Dr. King with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contributions to research and clinical care.

“I’m very proud of the honour, of course, but you don’t get an award like this alone. I would not have received this without my team,” he says.

Since 1992, Dr. King has been working in the Roth | McFarlane Hand and Upper Limb Centre (HULC) and has, alongside other researchers, developed technologies and new solutions to treat elbow problems and improve patient care – including one of the best-selling radial head implants in the world

A trailblazer whose work has improved systems of recovery and community integration in mental health, Cheryl Forchuk has been named an Officer of the Order of Canada.

The award presented by the governor general is one of Canada’s highest honours and recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.

Forchuk, PhD, is a scientist at Lawson Research Institute of St. Joseph’s Health Care London and a Distinguished University Professor in the Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing in Western's Faculty of Health Sciences.

Forchuk’s research has helped transform treatment – in Canada and internationally – for people experiencing homelessness, mental health and addiction.

“When I started working in this field, it was really hard to get things funded because the groups themselves were not valued. Their opinion was not valued. A lot of my work is trying to give value and voice to these populations,” she says.

Could a common cough medicine help slow dementia in Parkinson’s disease?

A new study from Lawson Research Institute, the research arm of St. Joseph's Health Care London, suggests Ambroxol, a drug widely used in Europe, may offer brain protection and improve symptoms in people with Parkinson’s-related dementia.

The clinical trial, now published in JAMA Neurology , found that Ambroxol was safe, well-tolerated, and showed promising effects — particularly in individuals with a high-risk gene variant.

“This early trial offers hope and lays the foundation for larger studies,” says lead researcher Dr. Stephen Pasternak.

Last week, St. Joseph’s Volunteer Services team welcomed Susan Zidaric Seymour, Director, Volunteer Resources & Retail Services and Anna Di Marcantonio, Manager, Retail Services from St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton to visit our on-site stores at Mount Hope and St. Joseph’s Hospital.

The teams spoke about on-site retail services and day-to-day store operations, as well as the partnership with Fanshawe College’s Fashion Marketing and Merchandise program.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to be able to share the successes we’ve seen in our stores, and learn more about what other hospitals are doing with their retail services.

All discretionary revenue generated in St. Joseph’s on-site stores is returned to patient care and patient and resident programs.
