We know seeking care at the Urgent Care Centre (UCC) can be stressful. To alleviate some of that stress, this video walks you through what to expect when you visit the UCC.

The UCC, located at the Grosvenor entrance of St. Joseph’s Hospital, offers one-stop care for individuals of all ages who have a non-life-threatening illness or injury.

For information on hours and examples of illnesses and injuries treated at the UCC, visit: https://www.sjhc.london.on.ca/areas-of-care/urgent-care-centre

In the event that we are experiencing extremely high volumes, early closure notices will be posted on our website.

Lymphedema is a chronic condition that develops when the lymphatic system is damaged – whether from radiation, lymph node removal, or other interventions. The condition can appear at any time: during cancer treatment, or even months or years later.

For Deb Jazey, it showed up shortly after.

On this week’s episode of PatientTalks, a DocTalks spinoff, Deb Jazey joins host Mandi Fields to share what it’s really like living with Lymphedema after breast cancer. From compression sleeves and public discomfort to clothing and jewelry that no longer fit, Deb breaks down what her day-to-day life looks like now.

Avoid your own Halloween horror story by following these safe pumpkin carving tips.

Every year, St. Joseph’s Hand and Upper Limb Centre (HULC) sees a spike in serious hand injuries from pumpkin carving accidents.

“These preventable injuries can lead to surgery and months of rehab,” says Dr. Ruby Grewal, orthopaedic surgeon in the Roth | McFarlane Hand & Upper Limb Centre.

The most common cause of injury is a knife slipping when carving toward your hand or pulling it out forcefully when stuck.

Carve safely this Halloween:
👉Use a pumpkin carving kit, not kitchen knives!
👉Carve in a well-lit area
👉Keep hands, tools and pumpkin dry
👉Adult supervision only – no sharp tools for kids
👉Cut away from yourself

If you do become Injured while carving apply direct pressure with a clean cloth, clean the wound and seek immediate care if you lose feeling or movement.

In advance of Thanksgiving, our Volunteer Services team brightened up the hallways at Parkwood Institute and St. Joseph’s Hospital with their “What I am thankful for” tree.

At St. Joseph’s we are so incredibly thankful for all our teams who show up and provide exceptional care today and every day 💙

We’re wishing the London community a safe and happy Thanksgiving weekend.

Lea Seguin attended three Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day’s before she made her decision to move forward with reconstruction after a bilateral mastectomy. During that time, she wasn’t sure she was able to handle another surgery and recovery after her mastectomy and chemotherapy.

In 2017, Lea decided to move ahead with reconstruction – a decision she says she wouldn’t change.

“It’s okay to change your mind, because how you feel today is not going to be the same as how you feel when your treatment is done,” says Lea.

On Oct. 23, Lea is returning to BRA Day as a model in the show and tell lounge, to help people decide if reconstruction is the right option for them.

Love chocolate, but not sure how you feel about beets? Put them together and try this Chocolate Beet Loaf, a recipe designed by our Nourish team.

✅ ¾ cup brown sugar (packed)
✅ ¾ cup grated beets
✅ 1/3 cup of olive oil

Meet Erin Finley, an occupational therapist in the Geriatric Psychiatry Program at Parkwood Institute. In her role, Erin supports older adults living with mental illness and age-related comorbidities.

Erin has been with St. Joseph’s for 17 years, 13 of which have been dedicated to Geriatric Psychiatry. Erin provides safety and mobility equipment, helps patients build daily routines and assesses home safety skills.

“I work with patients and their families to build skills, brainstorm strategies and connect them with resources to support their transition out of the hospital,” she says.

For Erin, the most rewarding part of her job is meeting and interacting with patients.

“It’s amazing to be part of their journey and to witness their progress.”

Happy Occupational Therapy Month!

Today (Sept 30), marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation across Canada; a time to join communities across our country in acknowledging that the path to reconciliation begins with truth-telling, listening, learning and unlearning.

This journey calls us to confront past and ongoing harms faced by Indigenous peoples and to understand their lasting impact. Reconciliation is not a one-time event but a continuous act of humility, respect and responsibility.

Flags will be lowered at all St. Joseph’s sites today, in recognition of the lives lost and the resilience of survivors.

The Health and Homelessness Whole of Community System Response Research and Evaluation Report is the first evaluation of its kind, offering an evidence-based look at how a community-wide response is making a difference.

The key findings include:

- Highly Supportive Housing is delivering results. Residents are healthier, more stable and use fewer emergency services.
- 24/7 hubs are changing lives. Over 100 people supported, with more than 40 transitions into housing since 2023.
- Direct service staff are the backbone. Their well-being is essential to system success.
- Preventable deaths among people experiencing homelessness are down 20 per cent between 2022 and 2024.

This report shows progress while underscoring the need for sustained investment, strong workforce support and cross-sector leadership.

St. Joseph’s is a proud partner in the Whole of Community System Response work – with the Atlosha Hub on the grounds of Parkwood Institute and Vice President of Patient Care and Quality, Jodi Younger serving as Co-Chair, Strategy and Accountability Table.
