Good morning! If you are over 45 years of age and have knee osteoarthritis our study is still recruiting volunteers. We are looking to see if pain due to osteoarthritis can be managed by a combination of yoga and transcranial direct current stimulation - a non-invasive brain stimulation technique.

Participation includes: 18 sessions over the course of 9 weeks at Parkwood Institute in London, ON. During week 1 the sessions would include some basic performance tests and transcranial direct current stimulation. During weeks 2-9 participants would receive weekly non-invasive transcranial direct current stimulation and twice weekly instructor led yoga classes.

Reimbursement: All participants will be reimbursed for parking and their time.

A little background information on why we are conducting this study with people who have knee osteoarthritis:

Living with knee osteoarthritis brings a challenge for individuals, as the associated pain disrupts their physical, social, and emotional well-being. This pain often leads to limited mobility, reduced quality of life, and increased healthcare costs. Despite efforts, current treatments, including exercise, offer only modest relief and have limited impact on the nervous system signaling responsible for persistent pain.

In response to the complexities of knee osteoarthritis pain, we propose a novel intervention that involves using non-invasive brain stimulation, called transcranial direct current stimulation, combined with yoga. The aims is to understand the potential impact that this type of brain stimulation and yoga have on pain and how it is processed to inform the improvement of pain management options for people with knee OA.

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) has shown promising results in improving pain in older adults with knee OA, especially when paired with exercises or mindfulness practices. Our unique approach involves 13 sessions of tDCS combined with yoga, providing the benefits of both strengthening and mindfulness to regulate the nervous system and potentially achieve significant pain reduction.
