A major update to Express Entry. The new process will allow selection of people in specific categories:

- strong French language proficiency
- healthcare
- science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions
- trades, such as carpenters, plumbers and contractors
- transport
- agriculture and agri-food

This new process will be great for Canada, because it will allow selection of people who are in high demand. It's also great news for immigrants because it will provide new opportunities for people with skills that are in demand that would likely make them successful in Canada.

Formal announcement from the IRCC on the comments.

Canada welcomed 401,000 new permanent residents in 2021, which is the largest number in a single year in history! This is more than double the 184,500 new permanent residents admitted through 2020.

The majority of new permanent residents were already in Canada on temporary status, either working or studying.

Although 2021 was marked by lockdowns, border and travel restrictions, and delays in processing applications, all due to COVID19, the IRCC processed half a million applications in 2021.

Interesting statistics about immigrants in Canada:
-> 1 in 3 Canadian businesses is owned by an immigrant
-> 1 in 4 health care workers is a newcomer to Canada
-> Almost 100% of Canada's labour force growth comes from immigration
-> By 2036 immigrants will represent about 30% of Canada's population
