The last 10 days have been tough, the kids were sick, I was sick and plans for March Break had to be cancelled. All the sickness and cancellations forced me to slow down—something I often encourage as an addiction coach, but don’t always practice myself.

My first reaction wasn’t calm. It was frustration. That urge to push through, stay productive, not fall behind. It reminded me how natural it is to avoid stillness.

But slowing down matters.

In recovery, it’s where you start to notice what you’re feeling instead of escaping it. It’s uncomfortable—but it’s also where healing begins.

This week looked like naps without guilt, unanswered emails, and letting my body lead.

A reminder—for you and for me: slowing down isn’t failure.
Sometimes it’s the work

Sarah Montes is a Clinical Counsellor, founder of Sarah Montes Recovery & Associates, and the addiction counsellor at evolve Psychotherapy & Consulting Group Inc. in London, Ontario.
Her work is grounded in a biopsychosocial-plus framework that blends cognitive and behavioural science with lived experience.

Specializing in addiction and codependency—both forms of self-abandonment—Sarah helps clients understand, rather than fight, their emotions.
By normalizing intense internal experiences, she supports people in moving from survival and emotional avoidance toward dignity, self-awareness, and meaningful choice.

In her session, she will explore why we often trust our thoughts over our physical signals. In this session, we explore the body as a "holder" of learned relational information.
Self-abandonment—often the root of addiction and codependency—shows up as physical patterns like breath-holding, muscle tension, or fatigue long before our thinking mind catches up.

This session offers a way back to yourself. Through gentle psychoeducation and experiential noticing, you will learn to interpret your body’s non-verbal language without the need for emotional excavation.
By shifting from "fixing" to "noticing," you will discover how simple awareness creates the choice to stay present and rebuild self-trust.

You cannot regulate what you haven't identified.

Emotional Awareness is the tool that helps us name the 'Emotional Hostage' feeling before it overwhelms us.

We use this to check our internal 'thermometer'—learning to soothe the heat of anger or the chill of shut-down before we react to others.

Name. Feel. Soothe.

We can adopt the Objective Witness mindset. When you feel the 'push and pull' of control, remind yourself: This is a survival mechanism seeking a way out; it is not a reflection of my worth or the truth of our relationship.

By witnessing the behaviour as a survival reflex rather than absorbing it as a personal attack, you lower your level of internal activation.

You don't have to attend every argument you're invited to.

Stay grounded in your truth: you are observing a storm, you are not the storm itself.

When we are in a state of Activation, our minds are usually in the PAST or the FUTURE.

Grounding is the tool we use to bring the nervous system back to the 'here and now.'

By engaging your senses, you signal to your body that you are safe in this exact moment. It’s the first step in moving from panic to presence."

Stay.

Passion + Profession + Experience

Thank you, Constable Wintjes, and for the invitation to speak today. I had the honour to talk about my own addiction journey, breaking the cycle of shame, and reducing the stigma of addiction.

At Sarah Montes Recovery & Associates we know recovery isn’t just about stopping a behavior; it’s about connecting to self, coping with our emotions, and reclaiming your life.

Grateful for the chance to share that message today!
